This last section where construction starts today is very short, something around 4km. The rest of A4 is already U/C (or ready).

Just over one year is really very close to impossible. There are many, many motorways and expressways U/C in Poland right now where a miracle will be required to finish them in time. On most sections works have not stopped this winter despite the weather. Still, in some places (especially A2 near Łódź where a Chinese company is a contractor and on expressways in southern Warsaw) I think they won't make it before June 2012. I hope I'm wrong about this.

Erm.. only 5,4 km, but it is part of a longer 22 km contract, the rest of which started in December 2010.

In general longer sections are constructed within two years.

toonczyk is right I am afraid.

we need miracles. I live close to Warsaw and really I am very dissapointed I need to do 100 km to feel (drive) a real motorway.

although there is one thing I am happy with ....

other regions (often poorer than my region) have got or will have an access to motorway soon. this does/will help developing these areas.

Well, I'm generally not pessimistic at all - scale of infrastructure investments in Poland is HUGE, this is two-three times more than I expected it to be by now just 3 years ago. And if you live in Izabelin you have some major construction sites within 30km from your home, including A2 motorway. All I'm saying is that some deadlines are extremely tight and I won't be surprised if in June 2012 it turns out a couple of contracts are running late. But I'm confident our motorway/expressway network will have grown by 100% by the end of next year, which is incredible news.

It's true what you are saying, but what it has to do with the fact that there is a small part of A4 in Kraków which is 2x4 and longer one in Katowice which is also 2x4?

This map gives a lot of great information about the future, but not so great about the present. For example, there is no way to know from this map that there is a decent 2x2 road all the way from Warsaw to Katowice.

This is map of highways and expressways in realization, so if road from Warsaw to Katowice is in rebuild, then you can't show it other way. If you want "present" map, then go to google maps.

Because it's winter down here Right now it's quite warm, but gets below freezing at night, so it's difficult to progress. Works have not stopped, but slowed down significantly. Not much has changed since the last photos here... If you are in need of some fresh pictures of this motorway, check out this thread, there are regular photo updates by decha and kmieciu.

Google maps is usually at least six months out of date. With the massive road construction going on now in Poland, Google maps leave much to be desired.

Then have a look at this:
http://mapa.ump.waw.pl/ump-www/index.html
Always up to date, very detailed. Planned roads are marked as well (visible only in closeup).

I saw, that on Polish forum, some discussions about S61 and Augustow bypass are going on. What are news about these projects?
