The real problem is politics - not to be elaborated here.

Very nice aerials

@ A2 photos: why is there a noise barrier in the middle of nowhere?

I guess it' because of the local road which is parallel to highway's lane. This must be related with the need of separation esp during nighttime. Car's lights from the local road could mislead the highway users.

We had a similar case recently in the Netherlands, where some people appealed at the council of state against the widening of the A28 near Zwolle. They argued there should be screens to avoid blinding of traffic of / from the parallel roads. The CoS eventually judged that there is no legal obligation to provide screens in such situations. I wonder if this is necessary in Poland?

By the way, these screens look very tall to me, almost like 3 or 4 meters. Isn't that a bit high for the sole reason to block light from the motorway / side roads? It appears to be a acoustic screen more so than anything else.

I used to drive more than 60.000 km per year for several years, some time ago and I had few difficult situations because of railways situated parallel to roads. The train lights misled me and blinded me few times. But as it come st to legal basis I have no clue about this.

Well, seems that the only reasonable answer is an angle of the picture which shorten the perspective, then.

They are noise barriers allright.

The Polish forumers discussed that there is some nature reserve or Natura2000 in that forest, and the animals also have the right to live in noise-free environment... Also, there are some lakes in the forest, so the screens may also be to keep their recreational quality.

S8 Construction

There was evidence of work at each end of the Zambrow bypass. On the Warsaw side, the foundations for the piers that will support the overpass are done. On the Bialystok side, the piers are in place (but no spans yet) and the asphalt is mostly in place between the future overpass and where it will join the road to Bialystok. I didn't see the any of the bypass other than the endpoints, so I cannot comment on the general progress.

From Jezewo Stare to Bialystok, the new overpasses are in various stages of completion and most of the asphalt has been laid. Traffic was routed back and forth among the old road and each the two new carriageways. It is clear from the signage that the route for public traffic shifts frequently as the works progress. As of today, both directions of traffic were routed adjacent to each other. It looks like the two directions of traffic may soon be routed on different carriageways, at least from time to time and along some stretches. It looks to me like this section will be completed on time in August 2012 if not before.

The last time I drove this way was the end of September 2010 and the progress is dramatic. At that time, there minimal evidence of early preparations.
I drove this in the reverse direction today, from Vilno via Bialystok to Warsaw. There was not a lot of obvious progress in only five days, but there was a lot of activity. If my memory is not failing me, there was one section where the traffic has been moved onto a different carriageway since last Sunday.

Due to the increased traffic on a Friday, my average speed was about half what it was last Sunday going the other way. On weekdays, I would recommend choosing an alternative route if possible. I expected it, was not in too much of a hurry, and wanted to see the construction.

Is there already a definite (certain) completion date for the Wrocław bypass? I believe it was August 28th?
