Thanks Blaskovitz for posting the comparison photos above. They seem to show two things: 1) there was much progress over the ten week period, 2) the works have been suspended. It seems no one is working on crash barriers, lighting, signage, painting, etc.

Crash barriers, lighting, signage, painting are not that important like bridges, asphalt etc, that max 2 weeks of work They have better things to do.

I assume these works are done by different subcontractors.

A Romanian business journal made a comparison of motorway openings in Poland and Romania:

Poor Romania. Maybe they get their "boom" too.

For 7 years in a row (2000-2007) close to nothing was built.

But now we have finally a boom in motorway construction, with about 370 km U/C, and about 150 more to become U/C in the coming months. A rough estimate would get us to 100-150 km of motorways opened this year.

Our "boom" is getting to its end, but I can share with you some numbers:

In the end of 2012 were gonna have 1600km of motorways, and 980 km of dual carriageway expressways (standard of western motorways).

In 2014 we will have at least 1650km of motorways, 1280km of expressways, and 300km of single carriageway expressways.

In next years we expect significant slowing down.

Well, I can only say wow! It's uncomparable to the rithm here, really. I know Poland receives from EU a lot more money for motorways than Romania, still that's a very impressing rate of construction. Congratulations!

PS: We'll probably top 1,000 km only in 2014.

Both Poland & Romania need to increase their pace of construction.

Even combined, this number of motorways is significantly less than that of former Yugoslavia - which has well over 2,500km of motorways, including 250-300km or so that opened last year.

Yep, the speed of construction must be seen in perspective, Poland and Romania had the most insufficent motorway networks of the new EU countries.

Well this statistics doesn't include expressways which eventually going to be much bigger network than motorways network in Poland. Right now we have 1865 km of combined motorways and expressways in use and 1265 km under construction.

@CrazySerb Not really. If you count motorways (autostrady) + dual-carriageway-expressways (drogi ekspresowe dwujezdniowe), that makes over 2,500 km too.

Remember, as kooba wrote above, an overwhelming majority of the drogi ekspresowe dwujezdniowe have exactly the characteristics of a motorway, except ... tolls. It's a bit like autovÝas and autopistas in Spain, which can be counted together.

Moreover, Poland has also got a lot of non-expressway-nor-motorway-standards dual carriageways ! However, if it makes journeys faster & a little bit more secure than single carriageways, there are still lots of collision crossroads.

Just as kooba, I hope Romania will also get a real boom.

If former Yougoslavia has 2,500km, Poland will have 2930km (I'm summing expressways and motorways, because our standard of "S" roads justify it) in 2014. Area of Poland to Yougoslavia ratio is about 1.2, so lets say were gonna have relatively 2930/1.2=2442 so you cant say it's significantly less.

At least we will have most of the big cities connected with high quality roads within two years. Our road network will no longer be a reason to shame

I don`t know, I toured Poland from north to souch back in 2007, hardly came across any kilometers of motorways. Though, I`m glad if the situation has improved this much since that time

@CrazySerb - A lot of things have changed from 2007 (A1 from Gdańsk to Toruń didn't even exist, just as A2 Konin-Strykˇw, that started functioning and A1 from the Silesian agglomeration to few km before the CZ border and A4 East of Krakˇw !) to 2010, & even more are changing from 2010 to now !

I will gladly see a complete motorway network in Poland just as in all former Yugoslav republics ! Now, the biggest issues for the EU in terms of road infrastructure will remain RO, BG, LV and EST ...

I dont really see such a big problem. They could just compare it in the logs. In both countries the total amount of km trippled. Thus its rather comparable.
