Glass soundwalls are just as effective, but probably more expensive.

We have very large soundwalls in the Netherlands as well, but they're farther from the driving lanes.

A28 near Amersfoort.

In polish law constant habitation means being there more than 4 hours a day. I think it may be a difference. But IMHO making houses soundproof its a good idea - worth considering. Furthermore, my favourite way of fighting with noise is to bulid soil banks.

As far as I know new buildings which need to be soundproofed (deaf facade) cannot have windows which can open. However, existing buildings which are soundproofed can have windows opening if they could do so before soundproofing. For example my apartment has a double wall (constructed 1979, soundproofed early 2000's) to reduce noise, but I can still open my windows.

Well, it is also question of the life outside of the house. Most suburban dutch houses have most of the times no to very tiny garden that is used only few times by most of the people. There are differences for the villages but thay comprise tiny share of the population I guess. The garden also most of the time doesnt face the roadside. The soundproofing doesnt help the situation outside the houses on the side that faces the highway. Of course one does not have to care if he dosnt have a garden or the garden is on the other side of the house.

Thats quite different to the situation in PL or CZ etc... where gardens and life outside the house is quite important feature of the suburban and village housing.

So the soundproof thing is just (or mainly) based on smart position of an object. That could work considering only detached housing. We can't do anything with thousands of blocks that already exist

btw
Maybe I'm not that modern yet but just can't imagine life with windows that don't open at all. What about fresh air or hot summer?

It usually only includes the facade that directly faces the road. I know some new houses that have been built with the function of a soundwall. The back of the house has only non-opening windows and faces the road. However, all life is on the other side, not facing the main road but just a residential street.

It's true it works better with residential housing (rowhouses or detached housing) than apartment blocks. On the other hand, sound levels tend to be lower above a certain height. For regular housing the highest immissions are usually achieved on the second or third floor.

Tender for the southern part of S8 in Warsaw (bypass of Raszyn) has been announced today. It'll hopefully be ready in 2015 and is going to be a huge improvement over how it looks like today:

More info in Polish here.

I hope that by 2020 we'll see the S8 complete all the way from Augustów to Kłodzko.

In some places there is just no possibility to build it e.g. stretch from Białystok to Suwałki.

Suwałki will be served by the S61, so there may be no need for the S8 to extend past Augustów.

Eight people were killed and ten others were injured, five seriously, after a collision between a minibus and a truck. The accident happened on the night of Wednesday to Thursday in Przybedza, southern Poland, Polish TVN24 television station announced.

The bus, carrying miners home from the local mine-Wesola Myslowice, trailer collided with a truck coming from the front, which has turned the opposite direction.

Seven people died on the spot, and the eighth died in hospital.
