I don't understand why is this considered expressway? Because of the junctions? Other than that it is just half profile motorway, meaning national road (in RO)

It probably has smaller lanes, and more narrow curves then a motorway. Every country has its own rules considering this.

What I wanted to say is that it should be considered national road (DK) not expressway (S), not motorway (A). It is just my opinion and I accept it can be wrong, but I know Poland has very strict rules reguarding distances between the junctions and others...

It's neither highway, nor national road - such roads are half profile motorways that....

Such roads are considered as expressways because they will be rebuilt into 2x2 in the future. The speed limit is 100 km/h (110 km/h for 2x2)

These rods give too much confidence for the drivers, which, combined with quite narrow shoulders, can be dangerous:

more DK4 - it has many 1x4 sections

Half of DK 1 length is 2x2, half 1x2

See the videos from DK4 in this thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...3#post16522023
Especially this video from 04:00min - DK4 near Rzeszów, large part is 1x4.

The thing with expressways in Poland is grade-separation. And law. The polish law about road construction says there are classes as follows:
A - motorway. Totally grade-separated. Always 2 carriageways. Should be tolled (but there are long stretches of A4 and A2 without toll).
There is no half-profile motororway in polish laws.
S - expressway. Grade-separated (although exceptions are allowed - but in reality grade intersecrions on S are very rare - I know only one). Can be 2 or 1 carriageway.
other classes are not grade-separated, but of course grade-separated interchanges are allowed...

So, the difference between S 1x2 and other single-carriageway-roads is grade separation (and limited access, which comes with it). Don't you think it is a rather important difference?

Roads like the S3 in the post #905 are considered expresways only when they are built half profile expresways. Like this one (S10 by Torun):

Like PLH said, in the future they will be upgraded to full profile. There are only 160 km this category roads in Poland.

PS. Allthogh there are one part of S3 in the North of Poland, that goes over the island Wolin to the harbor in the town Swinoujscie, and is planed only one lane, because it goes through a national park (other connection was not possible). But it is the only exception.
