Two new roads will be opened today: S3 between A2 (Jordanowo interchange) and Świebodzin (5,6km) as well as A4 Pawłosiów - Radymno (~16km). 23km of S17 will open most likely tomorrow.

This means that today Poland achieves next milestone: 2500 kilometers of existing motorways and expresways combined.

2000 kilometers were achieved in the previous year and 3000 kilometers will be achieved in the next year.

Pretty much a perfect motorway in every sense.

Sadly I didn't take any photos of the Warsaw bypass but that was quite an impressive sight.
You travelled on S8?

That glass tunnel is sick. The experience reminds of riding on elevated expressways in Shanghai. Only if skyscrapers were a bit closer

Did you drive to Wrocław from Germany by A4 or A18?

Don't drive eastbound via A18. It is nasty for standard cars

Are these red-white reflector poles placed every 100 meters?

It's a tricky question.

I drove only on the following roads in Poland
Ogrodgniki (PL/LT border) - Warsaw via Lomza and Zambrow

A2 Warsaw-PL/DE border

A4 PL/DE border to Wroclaw

Wroclaw to Warsaw on 8/S8

Warsaw - Ogrodniki PL/LT border via Bialystok

The simplest answer to describe the roads in Poland "right here and right now" ignoring the upcoming progress would be that the road system in Poland is still inadequate and underdeveloped and needs a lot of development. But I am against such short sighted views because progress and future projections are more important that "here and now". And Poland is undertaking Europe's biggest road expansion over the past few years (thank you Ger... EU )

I think it would be unfair to evaluate Polish roads 'here and now' because the progress is tremendous at the very least. I just found out that the entire section of S8 between Wroclaw and Warsaw will be complete next year! If the entire section (which, frankly, is quite horrible) will be an expressway it will be an improvement beyond comprehension. Same with the A2 section opened last year. It's rather amazing to see such progress. It's hard to believe this is even happening in Europe and not China.

So when I evaluate the roads I keep the current projects in mind. To my understanding Poland will have a fully adequate (=comprehensively good) road system in the next 5 to 10 years perhaps? I.e. when all the most important A and S roads will be complete. That would be a huge achievement given that even some countries which supposedly have completed their road development (e.g. the UK) do not and perhaps will not have an adequate road system. I think the development pace of motorways and expressways in Poland in on par with development of expressways in China (of course considering the scale) which is rather unprecedented in history.

That photo is taken with tele lens (perhaps something around 250mm in that particular case) which makes the perspective a little funny. The road looks a little uneven and even has those little 'humps' in a distance. But in reality it's as smooth and even as it can possibly get. You could probably go 800km/h on that without feeling a thing.

Pavement quality is generally good. There were a few stretches with rather poor quality but it was only a few km if remember right.

Too bad I don't have any experience on the road in Poland prior to 2010. I can imagine things in the late 90's/early 2000's were very different from today.

excuse me for my ignorance, but I'm quite impressed by that fact that Poland achieved 2000+ km of motorways in (seems to me) such a quick pace. Therefore, is there any well marked map here on SSC with current motorways and expressways? Thanks a lot!
