Blame that on the ones who want this A4. Without that proposal, or demand, there would be no need for these procedures.

Nice highways but they are rather rare. Hope you build some new routes in the nearby future.

Is the route of the S22 exactly the same as the old Berlinka, or not?

It looks like it to me. Heck, I'd love to see the Polish highway guys finish the rest of the old already-blazed and partially built WWII-era route grade between Gdansk and Szczecin. From what I can tell, most of it still exists or can be easily traced.

I love following these old routes.

Now - if we can get the Russians to upgrade their section and install a border crossing, with perhaps a further extension of it towards the Baltic states....

Nah, mate. I myself am an Ostpreußen native, and knowing how Russian government works, I don't believe it could be done in the foreseeable future When Russians took this area from Germany, they did not invest in infrastructure at all except military infrastructure. On that time, there was no need to continue building Berlinka because of the Iron Curtain, and now the government either doesn't have money or desire to do so although it would greatly benefit the economical development of the region.

Those S-routes look just like normal motorways, what is the difference? Why not make real motorways?

There is a border crossing Grzechotki (PL) - Mamonowo II (RUS), AFAIK the biggest border crossing between Poland and Russia. Thanks to PHARE funds it was developed recently. The S22 expressway is part of Ia TEN-T corridor, so called Via Baltica, which connects Gdańsk, Kaliningrad, Riga and Tallin. The russian part must be upgraded, in other case it cause isolation of Kaliningrad and Baltic states.

There is a lot of technical differeces between highway (A) and expressway (S), for example design velocity, wideness od lanes (3,75 m and 3,5 m respectively), maximal longitudinal grade (4% and even 8% respectively), minimal radius of curve. The most important difference is that highway must have at least double level junctions, while it is allowed to build one level junction on expressway.

You forgot, that a distance between highways (A) junctions must be at least 3.5km.

In Poland we have:

- Highways (A)

There must have at least double level junctions, 2.5m side-space; required a distance between junctions: 3.5km; is required to build barriers between roads.

- Expressways (S)
a) 2-roads
b) 1-roads

There must have at least double level junctions; 1.0m side-space; a distance between junctions is undefined; is required to build barriers between roads.
- Mainroads (DK)
a) 2-roads
b) 1-roads

There mustn't have at least double level junctions; without side-space; a distance between junctions is undefined; isn't required to build barriers between roads.

- other roads

That sounds kind of a stupid requirement! If so, you can rename almost all of the Dutch motorway network!
How are you gonna do that in urban areas like Warszawa or Silesia?

I checked Warszawa yesterday on Google Earth, and i found a surprisingly good road network. Most roads are at least 2 lanes per direction, and a lot of 2-levelcrossings.

Remnant of Hitler's autobahn system. A new roadway has been upbuilt to the old one, built by Adolf.
As of now, whole northern stretch had been completed. Now, the remaaining - the southern roadway is waiting
for the "go ahead" to rebuild to the now days standards. When ist's gonna happen? - who knows?

The A18 highway in Poland is a short (75 km) motorway which, when completed,
will run from the Polish/German border at Olszyna/Bademeusel (connecting to the German A15 autobahn)
to the junction with the Polish A4 motorway. The highway will be a part of the European route E36.
At present only 7 km are officialy designated as a motorway, the rest is signed as National Road 18 (DK18).
More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostr...8_%28Poland%29

Pictures taken last september, during the opening of a portion of new built roadway.

Side road saling point, with garden goods, dedicated especially to german tourists (they just love it.)

On this picture: a remnant of the Hitler's autobahn and the new upbuilt roadway.

So now the traffic is running on the new half (to be able to rebuild the old half), or both sides are open for traffic, so one side of the motorway is crappy?
