This stretch is under construction, about 50% of progress. There are some problems with the building company, but if they get solved, the road should be completed in 2014.

There is also S16 near Biskupiec, but it is a smaller stretch and near finish.

S3 Szczecin - Gorzów Wielkopolski

Hauling ass across Poland. I recorded this video 2 weeks ago on my trip through northwestern Polska.

S3 is one of the best-designed roads in Europe. Curve radii are very gently and the road is well aligned. Plus it is well-equipped with gas and food, if I remember correctly there are three fast-food restaurants on the rest areas along S3 between Szczecin and Gorzów Wielkopolski.

Some quick questions/observations :

Why is there blue signs for "transzyt obwodnica trojmiasta" in Gdansk? These signs look new - but surely they're completely wrong?

I noticed signs for the S91 on the way to Gdansk from Poznan - is this an official designation or not?

When was the first "S" class road created and signed?

Indeed. It supposed to be A-road and that is how it was designed from scratch (later shoulders were narrowed to S road standard as I remember), in opposition to most expressways in Poland build along old road.

I suspect that some expressways will be redesignated to motorway in the coming years once construction slows down - many of them are built to a decent enough standard that there's no reason to have them otherwise.

There are minor differences between A and S roads in Poland (3.75m vs 3.50m lanes, 3.0m vs 2.5m hard shoulder, fewer interchanges, higher speed limit), but in my opinion those do not justify this ridiculous division into tolled A-roads and free S-roads. I think it's just a matter of time before all motorways and expressways are tolled.

This is not about tolls. Obviously there are exceptions like S8 between Warsaw and Piotrkow Trybunalski or S3 in the West. There are clear differences between expressways and motorways. Most of expressways in Poland are built along old roads with added bypasses of bigger villages or towns. These expressways have lots of exits (sometimes ridiculously too many) and are not very well aligned in opposition to motorways which are designed and build from scratch with wider lanes and shoulders. I am surprised by how many people in Poland are saying that there is no difference between expressways and motorways in their country.

What about the A4 from Germany to Wroclaw?
It's mostly without shoulder and limited to 110 and it's not tolled.

Do you mean old part of A4 and A18? It was built before 2WW.

I think that's the one, yes http://goo.gl/maps/mTv2Z

So it was built by the Germans then. But was it refurbished or anything since then?
I drove on it in May and I have to say it's in good state for such an old motorway.

This old part of A4 was renovated few years ago, but it was impossible to add shoulders on this stretch because of the construction of these viaducts.
