I told it and repeat it: creating even more roads through downtown will only increase traffic and reduce the quality for its inhabitants. It's not needed, and will never be "city-friendly".

As for the downtown ring road, improvements such as underpasses could be a solution - maybe even not needed when the bypass will be opened.

Anyway, where I am a bit confused, is that in Poland paradoxically, it seems much easier and "less opponents-like" to build new huge roads inside the very cities, than a proper bypass or ring road.

They seem to be upgrading Aleja Józefa Piłsudskiego in Łódź as a better east-west route.

The bus station intersection appears to be rather large compared to what there was before, and what roads it connects. But I'm sure they've thought this through and there is a reason for it.

Then this is a bad example, because thay are not creating a new road, only modernising an existing one.

Yes, like in Warsaw (and many other Polish cities as well)...Which are even more congested now and delays much longer...

FYI, these are in fact 3 new "wide" roads in the middle of downtown Łódź - not only East-West but also Nort-South inside the city center, that's completely crazy!: Ulica Nowowęglowa I, Nowowęglowa II, Nowotargowa, ("nowo" means "new" in Polish), plus 3-level interchange . Further, not including widening and prolongation of separate of only a few dozen of meters parallel Ulica Kilińskiego .

Reading the Polish SC forum about this subject, they are jokes that Łódź will now have its runways directly inside the center . Moreover, there are lots of negative comments about it...

It seems we might be off-topic here. I think the forum is about highways and autobahns (in Poland that would be A, S, DK, and DW roads), not urban streets.

The subject of this thread is "road infrastructure of Poland", and lots of discussion goes for national roads (DK), regional roads (DW and others), as well as urban arteries (like the Łazienkowski bridge in Warsaw). By the way, Łódź doesn't have yet a motorway/expressway bypass - like many Polish cities yet lack - should we not discuss because of it?

Warsaw center was rebuilt in the '70 when that was the international trend and probably worked much better with the levels of motorization we had at that time.

A quick reminder, Łazienkowski Bridge caught fire in February this year. Steel construction was badly damaged and a decision was made to rebuild the bridge. This week last damaged sections were removed and the new main steel construction is almost ready.

There have been some difficulties, for example it's been one of the driest summers recorded and Vistula river's levels were lowest in decades, which meant barges could not be used as planned.

Despite all that, they are working day and night and it's possible the bridge will be opened to traffic in early November.

Not a bad pace for a bridge spanning 400+ meters

3,5 years ago, in early 2012, a fire occurred under a small bridge of A57 in Dormagen, Germany. The bridge was demolished and replaced by temporary bailey bridge spans. Replacement may come in 2018...

So all lanes of S8 in Warsaw opened to traffic today.

http://tvnwarszawa.tvn24.pl/informac...ne,179881.html

I guess that counts as a formal motorway opening, right?

Congratulations Warsaw - a few steps nearer to a fully complete ring road
- once S2 southern bypass is fully complete things will be even better
