I thought it's common that S roads get the numbering of the DK roads they replace!? That's why I'm surprised. Are there more exceptions?

In general, I don't like that kind of replacing though.

I don't think so... A1 is not so close to the city as A2 in Poznań, so it won't be jammed by local traffic.

S19 south of Rzeszów. The existing road used to have the number 9, but it was renumbered to 19 two years ago.

S3 south of Bolków which will replace DK5.

S74 east from Opató which will replace DK77.

I don't think proximity to the city makes big difference. Look at permanently blocked by traffic (not only on summer weekends) S6 in Tricity or crowded A4 in Silesia... BTW the difference between distance from motorway to the center of city in Poznan and in Lodz is unnoticeable. Much more important is that in both cases few major routes merge into one motorway. In case of Poznan it is S11 and S5 into A2. In Lodz S8 into A1, and then that intersects with A2. All of them will carry heavy transit.

By how many km is it shorter? By just looking at the map I see that it is longer, plus you need to either make a detour via DK12/91 or turn around on the interchange with DK74.

Even if the route via the A2 were faster (which I doubt), the fuel costs would be decisive for most drivers. Of course, the exact destination within Warsaw would make a difference for some drivers.
Speed limit on A2 is greater than on S8

Traffic would have to be directed via S14 which means proper road signs along A2 and S8. It wouldn’t solve the case as many drivers use sat-nav which, I guess, would suggest going via A1 due to higher speed limit. And can you imagine the outrage of drivers travelling on Warsaw – Wrocław route because of that 20 km/h difference ?

Joking aside, I think it’s a good idea to at least try to separate north-south and east-west traffic by doing exactly that.

Besides, Wikipedia is not always the best sourced. S16 was not part of the official expressway programme so far, even though some segments of DK16 were built to de-facto expressway standard.

I wonder if they plan to build the Ostróda - Olsztyn stretch soon, or if they are planning that east-west traffic should use S7+S51 via Olsztynek. It's not a huge detour in an area where rural traffic may not be sufficient to demand a triangle of expressways.
Absolutely true. The information is as of 2013 so I am trying to edit it by looking in the latest maps, but I reckon they just wanna that multimillion encyclopedia to become dusty rubbish in the e-library.

In operation -95km, in construction - ~85km. New contracts should be signed in this month for S5 construction for about 100km

S3 Legnica - Jawor

GDDKiA signed the contracts with Eurovia/Warbud for the construction of 20 kilometers of S3 between Legnica and Jawor.

http://www.gddkia.gov.pl/pl/a/20133/...awor-podpisana

The opening is planned for 2018, despite the 36 month + winter stop deadline which would put an opening in 2019.

Is this the cheapest segment of motorway in Poland? The contract value is 316 million złotych (€ 74 million) which is only € 3.7 million per kilometer. Of course the price is lowered by the fact that the interchanges are part of the other contracts north and south of this segment, but it is still much cheaper than the typical 6 - 7 million for a rural droga ekspresowa. Spain shows such a construction price is feasible though.

A bridge with the second highest pylon in Poland (108m) opens tomorrow. It is a part of Rzeszów's inner ringroad.

Some photos from the forum:

And it's very similar to the Świętokrzyski Bridge in Warsaw opened in 2000:

If not the Rzeszów coats of arms and blue color on the pylon it would be almost identical to the one in Warsaw. Everyone in Poland loves copying the Capital .

Finaly, a decent video trailer for road safety campaign in Poland .
With typical behavior of "good, best of the world", sorry "completely sucking idiots and criminals in liberty" drivers. IMHO, they should had also add: bumpers distance tailgating and flashing at 150 km/h to other vehicles overtaking on the motorway, missing pedestrians on the zebras, and "self-punishment", i.a.
I would like to see this video passed over and over again in ALL Polish channels, on the popular web portals, newspapers, billboards, etc. But also images of accidents and recovery of bodies, so that its get in to the population that this is not a socially accepted behavior .
