What's the plan for the A4 at the border crossing to Ukraine? When i look in OSM, it seems like both countries have decided to build an unobstructed motorway right across the border, bypassing the existing border stations. But obviously border checks are not going away anywhere in the medium or long term, resulting in the current awkward abrupt re-direction of traffic of and on the A4. Why has the A4, and on the Ukrainian side, the m-10, been built as if no border check will be needed?

The plan is to keep the existing terminal for truck/buses only, while cars will pass through some new infrastructure built next to the border line. The problem is that Poland seems to be unwilling to build a facility big enough for both PL and UA, while UA is incredibly reluctant to build anything when their existing border crossing copes with the traffic.

In short, it's just typical boneheadedness. This should have been completed along with the A4, but instead, it's in limbo.

There really should be significantly more border crossings with UA, but Poland seems to think that every new border crossing needs to be built like a fortress.

It's an external Schengen border, they are supposed to be fortress
Plus it's with a country with a war going on (!) even if it is only "warm" instead of hot...

Thank you for the answer, I had an idea it would be something like that. It still is a bit unsatisfying though. It seems both sides agree that extensive border facilities will be needed, they just disagree about whether existing facilities are sufficient. So why have both sides spent resources on building half a kilometer of motorway, before any agreement about the configuration of the border has been reached? In the event that an agreement comes, this stretch of road will have to be reconfigured, dug up, and changed anyway, since there is no provision for border facilities built in. It just doesn't seem to have any justification to have it built, and yet both countries have.

I can't find the visualisation right now, but from what I remember, the intention was to build something very simple, rather like what was built on the H/RO border at Nădlac II. It wouldn't require much (if any) re-configuring of the road, just extra asphalt. Building it this way also allows for the car crossing to be located further away from the borderline.

Very nice. 2016 has been a productive year it seems. The next few years will be a construction boom similar to 2011-2012. Many design-build contracts will be going into construction phase.

That's true but there are few expressways opening over the remainder of 2016

But well done Poland for getting so many new contracts signed off!
