Regensburg / Ratyzbona

Gent / Gandawa

At least we do not have a need to sign these places

Ostrawa, Koszyce, Praga, Drezno, Lwów, Żylina or Ołomuniec...

Original names should be on
Thanks for supportive answer I know people should be proud of its country and habbits, but highway signage is not that case I think... Imagine our D8 motorway heading Germany and signage showing "Drážďany"??? Horrible idea, no one except czechs is able to read it, leaving alone people that know its an equivalent for Dresden ...

It's nice to see a great progress on Polish motorways and expressways, signage could make some progress too, I see many of Polish forumers are discussing it as well in Infrastruktura drogowa subforum, you have even two threads regarding this topic (oznakowanie dróg) and those proposals from MAG do look really great

Of course we are discussing it there, I think MAG's designs are really good. I hope 'Gdaka' (a nickname for our roads authority 'GDDKiA' ) will be willing to make changes in polish signage, out fonr is really good and can stay, new signage (if will be ever introduced) should be also covering expressways, just change blue to green and voila !

So maby to stop this useless conversation.
Nobody says that foreigners must now Polish names of the cities, so to solve such problems everywhere roads are signed with number any problem? Just take a map-numbers are everywhere the same

What about Grodziec Królowej ?

It's useful conversation where importans aspect of signage is discussed.

I just hope era of Jędrzychowice etc. will be finished, since we have no borders in Schengen

For a while now, the Netherlands and Germany are now signing cities by their real names, so Arnheim and Nimwegen are being replaced with Arnhem en Nijmegen, and Keulen en Aken are being replaced with Köln and Aachen.
Then why do Germans sign Polish cities in German? The German name is useless in Poland. This whole debate is pointless IMO, the road signs in a country should be in that country's main language, since almost all drivers in that country speak that language, and the road signs are for them 1st, and for international drivers 2nd. Furthermore, I think some forumers here are making a mountain out of a molehill (ie blowing this out of proportion). I seriously doubt anyone has ever gotten lost due to the signs being in a foreign language. If you can't read a map, you have more problems than just reading the language the sign is in.

They probably used to sign "Breslau" because it used to be German. However, that's quite a while ago now, so it's better to turn it around, and make it "Wrocław (Breslau)", because there is no similarity between the two names.

The problem is many Germans probably cannot pronounce Wrocław or Łódź, so it makes some sense to sign a translation. Although I'm in favor of very simple signage with only one name, I can agree with a translation like Breslau or Lodz, but only after the original name between brackets, favorably in a somewhat smaller font.

Some signs even show three different translations, they don't make signs very clear, especially if there are for example four destinations shown of which 2 of them are translated into two or three different languages. It's hard to say which ones are translated and which are not...

Królewiec sounds much better

Well, Germans would sign Łódź as Litzmannstadt...

Just to stop the signage debate and as a break from talking about motorways does anybody know how construction of the S6 bypass of Słupsk is going? Is it due to be completed next year or in 2010? It will only 16.3km long with just four interchanges so it shouldn't take that long to build. Although if it was me I would build the S6 to the north of the town so that traffic heading off the E28 to the resort towns of Ustka and Darłowo on the Baltic coast wouldn't have to go thorugh Słupsk (thus defeating the object of the bypass)

You must know one thing - no matter how long a section U/C is(it can be either 100 or 15 km), in Poland the construction always lasts between 19 and 22 months.

I only asked about how construction of the Słupsk S6 bypass and its expected completion time because so many of Poland's motorway and expressway building projects seem to be delayed
(the A4 motorway from Zgorzelec-Krzyzowa being a prime example)
I haven't got time to swot up about Poland's building timescales
