Those 1980's shots of post-industrial / docks wasteland remind me of this Halifax advert... London just seemed so drab and jaded in the early 1980's

18 seconds in on the Halifax add looks like the Old Kings Head on Borough High Street;



And Jamie I think that is Kings Reach Tower in the background, if it is the warehouse was replaced by the Sea Containers Building.

It's not - you can still see part of the tower in the old picture.

Well spotted as the OXO Tower though - I knew it looked familiar, but couldn't place it.

It wasn't immediately apparent, but I recognised King's Reach behind and when looking at potential buildings, I thought "oh that's what they must have knocked down for the front of the OXO tower building"... It was only when I found a modern photo that it dawned that it is the same building (just much cleaner and altered)

Milcote St / King James St SE1... North of Borough Road and very much in Zone 1

Still appear on Google earth, but since demolished for luxury flats

Devas St bow.
Built 1860, materials : London stock and stone.

Demolished 2006 and replaced by high-density, affordable housing by Barratt Holmes, lovely.

but appeared far more real life than todays endless pret a mangers and costa coffee shops. I would even take early 90's london over todays. Architecture has definitely improved but lots of the place is lacking the character it had in the past.

Tonight's episode was about the changes in the streets around Deptford High Street - an area I grew up knowing. Like much of South London, the area may not have had the historical or architectural significance of other parts of the city, but the awful 60's/70's estates that replaced the old streets were inferior in so many ways and destroyed whole established communities.

Every planner, politician and architect should be made to sit down and watch it.
