CBD is also an americanism... as is city centre anyway.. read your 1950's planning books.

MK does NOT have a city centre
A: because its not a city.
B: because they call it Central Milton Keynes.

Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing, show you my thing
Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing, show you my thing

Go down go down go down go down town
Go down go down go down go down

Your face never saw the sites the bright lights
The walls that always invite
Get it right no more fight
You'll be there up all night
I'll give you a bus ride a park slide
a High rise full of suprises
a Smooth path
Follow track
All the way to my flat

Come with me come with me come with me come with me there

Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing, show you my thing
Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing, show you my thing

Cause I wanna take you down town

Went to your area and I thought I would bury ya
Touched a monolith and it caused a hysrteria
You keep on pining for me to go dining
I Had me a meal and that keep me belly from whining

Come with me come with me come with me come with me there

Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing show you my thing
Cause I wanna take you down town
Show you my thing show you my thing

Cause i wanna take you down town

Go down go down go down go down town
Go down go down go down go down town
Go down go down go down go down town
Go down go down go down go down town

Caves for braving
Flags for waving
Clubs for raving
Roads for paving
Rivers for sailing
Stores unveiling
Walls for scaling
Temples for wailing

Downtown by Peaches. I assume it's about oral sex, just like most of her songs.

You miss the point. I have never heard anybody anywhere say I am going to the city centre.

City centre is planners speak... downtown is more etherial is it not... it also hints at something more exotic than shops and dickheads sitting in an office in the CBD all day... then commuting straight home.... sort of place that MK is?

It's "up town" in Birmingham, (even though it's down hill for a lot of the way for people in the north of the city!!)

London doesn't have a city centre it has The City and The West End plus Knightsbridge and Chelsea.

New York doesn't have a downtown it has a Midtown and Wall St an upper West Side and a Lower East Side amongs others.

Paris is the same, districts rather than a centre.

This seems to be the case with very big cities possibly because they have a stock of very rich people who in the past developed seperate shopping and entertainment areas away from the hoi polloi.

Smaller provincial cities have centres or downtowns.

I say "I'm going to town".

I do refer to the city centre as the city centre though.

Including your wife's, Isaac? Old school.

Several of my married friends aren't allowed to leave the room in order to go to the toilet without having a form signed by their wives first.

I say 'I'm going to Birmingham' because if you say you're going to town, people are confused if you mean Sutton Coldfield town centre or Birmingham city centre. That's cus of where I live, y'see.

I usually say "I'm off down town". Not to be confused with "i'm off to downtown"

Yes Telford boy, you must be weired

Paulmat... I have never heard anyone say 'off TO downtown' so you are a downtown user. Listen to (usually) the Americans use the word... they only ever say going downtown, not TO downtown either.

I don't know where the habit of saying downtown comes from in Liverpool, but it has been used for over 100 years... perhaps from the time when to go would literally have been DOWN to TOWN... i.e coming off all those hills in Everton, Parlie etc???? I would like to think that we influenced the Americans, rather than the other way round.

EFC... you must have lived underground to go 'UP'

Interesting discussion... I see that my first contention, that nobody says 'I'm just off to the city centre for some clogs' holds out... as I say... shittiy planners-speak!

Depending on the inflection though 'Downtown' can mean something else entirely... as in 'I got me fella to go 'downtown' on me last night!!!!!!

I mean't it asin I say 'i'm off down town', because it's down towards town. Not asin i'm going to the downtown area. Didn't really explain it very well.
