IMO commieblocks are sometimes looking much better than pseudomodern satelite villageses and towns. And the new repainting is sometimes very awful - i dont understand what`s wrong on colors like white or gray.... Fortunately, the age of po "podnikatelske baroko" is already past.. Anyway, its just my oppinion, please dont kill me

I will have to say that I agree with you, e2ek1el. Although I prefer glass over concrete, people all over the world are still building commieblocks.

Commieblocks are nothing more than communities built according to a masterplan, rather than allowing the community to evolve naturally (as it had happened until recently).

The Romans with their organized cities might have built the first commieblocks, but on a much less grand (and disturbing) scale.

The worst places in the world in terms of communities built according to a masterplan are: China, Korea (both North and South), and certain parts of the former U.S.S.R.

Thank you very much for correcting me, but you missed the point. I was refering to the communist-era division into western and eastern blocks, that's why I wrote "eastern" with a small letter. As you probably know, you wouldn't be able to find commieblocks in tiny towns in Austria for example - which is still central Europe by today's division. So saying CE would not illustrate my point.

As for commieblocks, the worst thing is lack of proportion which, sadly, was common. But sometimes it is just a matter of time to accept things, get used to them and discover their beauty. Some commieblocks have this potential quality (if they last, that is :-)).

Look at these pictures

Jesuit college in Kutná Hora. A part of an UNESCO protected town. But at it' s time nothing more than a baroque utilitary architecture with no real invention, horribly out of scale in environment of a medieval city. Now an organic part and very important monument of Kutná Hora.

You know, Estonia has 1.5 million inhabitants and Slovakia 5.4 million. I know it's not very big difference but it could be the cause why there are not so big commieblocks in rural areas in Estonia.

Yes, it makes a difference but for example in Tartu(100 000 inh) there are only a few 9 storey commieblock houses, most of them have 5 storeys. In the pictures shown here i can see 9(or 8?)-storey commieblocks in very little towns(<10 000)

I have been to Budapest couple of times and there's no way it has less commieblocks than Bratislava!

You should be happy there are no commie monsters in your country. I think the number of commieblocks in the town is more important than the floor count. I mean there are maybe high commieblocks in quite little towns but there is only five or six so high commieblocks in whole town. It looks strange but communists didn't care about how should our towns look like in the future. It was just cheaper to build five high commieblocks than ten low.

I prefer lower commieblocks because they don't have such huge impact on the skyline and they are more people friendly too.
