September 04, 2007 23:13 PM KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's University of Technology Petronas in Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak, is among nine projects picked for the 2007 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the world's most prestigious architectural prize. Eight other projects listed for the award are the Samir Kassir Square in Beirut; Rehabilitation of the City of Shibam (Yemen); Central Market (Koudougou, Burkina Faso); Restoration of the Amiriya Complex (Rada, Yemen); and Moulmein Rise Residential Tower (Singapore). Also on the list are the Netherlands Embassy (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia); Rehabilitation of the Walled City, (Nicosia, Cyprus); and the School in Rudrapur (Dinajpur, Bangladesh). The announcement was made by Aga Khan in an award ceremony at the Philharmonic Hall of the Petronas Twin Towers here tonight officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The award is managed by a steering committee headed by Aga Khan. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture has a triennial prize fund of US$500,000, making it the world's largest architectural award. The award was established in 1977 by Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture through architecture. In the current cycle of the award, 343 projects were submitted for consideration and 27 were reviewed on-site by international experts. An independent master jury selected the nine award "recipients" that are notable for having attained the highest standards of architectural excellence while reflecting the values of their specific environment. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is part of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture which has a range of activities for preserving and promoting materials and spiritual heritage of Muslim societies. The award's method is to seek out and recognise examples of architectural excellence, encompassing varied contemporary designs, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, reuse and area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues. Its selection process emphasises architecture that not only provides for people's physical, social and economic needs, but also stimulates and responds to their cultural and spiritual expectations. Tonight's prize-giving ceremony will be followed by a seminar at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre tomorrow to discuss issues and trends that emerged during the Award Master Jury's deliberations and through the selection process. With its emblematic high-tech architecture, the University of Technology Petronas provides an inspiring structure for progressive education in this rapidly-developing nation. The award goes to the architects, Foster+Partners and GDP Architects and the Petronas Corporation. The Samir Kassir Square is a restrained and serene urban public space that skilfully handles the conditions and infrastructures of its location in a city that has undergone rapid redevelopment. The award goes to Vladimir Djurovic, the pre-eminent landscape architect working in Lebanon today. The Rehabilitation of the City of Shibam is part of a project that focuses on the preservation of this unique place as a living community, with architectural restoration integrated into the creation of new economic and social structures. The award recipients are the Yemeni government and its cultural agencies, the German Technical Corporation and the Shibam community. The Koudougou's Central Market introduces simple improvements to a traditional material, stabilised earth, to create an important space for civic exchange and economic opportunity, helping enhance and strengthen a mid-sized town in Burkina Faso. The award is shared by the Koudougou Municipality, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the principal architect, Laurent Sechaud. The Restoration of the Amiriya Complex in Yemen saw the revival of lost techniques of building and ornamentation. The Award is for the project directors, renowned Iraqi archaeologist and restorer Selma Al-Radi and her Yemeni counterpart Yahya Al-Nasiri. The Moulmein Rise Residential Tower uses innovative techniques and detailing that combine new principles for tropical design and improvements for highrise living. Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, partners at the Singapore firm, WOHA Architects, are the receivers of the award. The guiding principle in the construction of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa was a respect for place while addressing the functional requirments of a working embassy, resulting in a contemporary structure that fully engages its local environment. The Dutch architects Dick van Gameren and Bjarne Mastenbroek are receivers of the award, together with Ethiopian architects at the firm ABBA Architects. A collaborative and sustained effort, the Rehabilitation of the Walled City of Nicosia, has been successful in reversing the city's physical and economic decline. Representatives of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities share the award with the Nicosia Master Plan team. Hand-built in four months by the local community and volunteer architects from Germany and Austria, the School in Rudrapur, Bangladesh, used easily-available local materials to create a new model for school construction -- beautiful, simple and humane. The architects -- Anna Heringer and Eike Roswag -- share the award with craftsmen and volunteers who assisted in the building, and Dipshikha, the Bangladeshi non-governmental organisation for sustainable rural development. -- BERNAMA |

Visitors travelling from Shah Alam to Klang will notice imposing silver coloured Keris Semenanjung on the left of the Federal Highway, just before the Bukit Raja Industrial area. This memorial was erected to commemorate the silver jubilee of the Sultan of Selangor's installation in 1985. The Keris is a wavy bladed Malay dagger which symbolises power, strength and unity. by ehsan71 image hosted on flickr

Architecture - Malacca
Melaka's Sultanate Palace Malacca Sultanate Palace is an exquisite piece of Malay architecture and is a replica of the original 15th century palace of Malacca's extinct Sultanate. The palace is built based on sketches found in the ancient Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals). This wooden replica of the Sultan's palace houses the Malacca Cultural Museum. Facing the palace is the Historic City Memorial Garden. An intriguing monument to commemorate the declaration of Malacca as a Historic City is the showpiece of this garden. The monument is topped with a replica of a Malay royal headress, a symbol of Malaysians' allegiance to the throne. ![]()
