As much as I hate to say this but Chile probably puts the US to shame as far as roadway quality is concerned.

Are you kidding? What do you mean?
Chilean motorways look OK pavement-wise but nothing exeptional.
The problem is they also look very twisted, full of hills, dips, sharp bends and are also quite narrow. At least looking at the pictures, I have to admit I haven't visited Chile yet.

San Cristobal Tunnel

Videos 1 and 2: San Cristobal Tunnel connects Vespucio Norte Highway with Santiago's Financial Centre. It runs under Metropolitan Park (San Cristobal Hill) and users pay toll through free-flow tag.

Video 3: Costanera Norte Highway. It runs under the Mapocho River from eastern to western Santiago. Users also pay toll through free-flow tag.

Chile seems to have give way lines like the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and some other places!

Very nice motorways too, Route 152 reminds me of the Portuguese A14.

The thing about Chile compared to some other South American countries... having done a bit of research, it's obvious to me that Chile has decided to build a proper developed-country motorway system, while nations such as Peru and Colombia are still (mostly) doing ad hoc improvements to their legacy system. The difference between Santiago and Lima or Bogota is quite stark in that regard, and the rural sections of Chile's network are impressive as well.

The thing that you seem to forget is that Chile is in another level of development than Colombia or Peru, that's the main reason really.

I am just refering to general maintence. While the Interstate highway system has less variances in grades alot of interstates have potholes and other shoddy maintence although it depends on the state. I would say Chile does a much better job at maintaining their highways than Louisiana, but the overall road quality is better in Texas and Colorado than it is in Chile.

the chilean highways are one of the most better ones in south america, we make maintenance the best as possible.
Remember that the 27F earthquake made severe damages in the most part of the roads, and after one year you can't note what happened last year.

The services of some highways are excellent, but in others we wish that could be better.
