Would you really want to live opposite such self indulgent mess of a building? The problem i have with it and with most alsop buildings are that they are plonked in places without any consideration whatsover to their surroundings. They just want to be iconic without any real understanding of the architectual history of the area in the vain hope they will somehow become a new landmark, ofcourse they will but for all the wrong reasons.

Does anybody actually know if this ever made it to a planning application. I can't remember if it had ever been submitted. It certainly hasn't got planning permission.

Alsop dropped from City Road
www.building.co.uk 6 February 2009 Will Alsop has been replaced by architect Jestico + Whiles on a 43-storey tower development in central London The tower at 151 City Road was to have been a collaboration between Alsop and artist Bruce McLean featuring a mix of shops, bars, a fitness centre, a hotel and flats. Publicity at the building’s launch in February 2007 hailed it as a “pioneering new building type, fusing large-scale art, sculpture and architecture”. But client Endorra Holdings, part of the Access Self Storage group, has appointed Jestico + Whiles to design the building instead of Alsop. A spokesperson for Alsop claimed the client had been persuaded to opt for a less ambitious scheme because of the economic climate. He said: “In the light of this decision we have decided to rule ourselves out.” |

Interesting what they'll come up with. I don't think they've done anything on this scale before. The most famous works they've done is this apartment block in Limehouse.

Well they are not that bad, infact they are quiet good architects, maybe not as radical as the alsop building.

Phew... I breath a serious sigh of relief!!
Been standing in my garden today wondering what the building was just popping into view. It turns out to be Eagle house but when I spotted this thread I read the whole thing seriously sh*tting it... no way did I want to look out my window every day and see that mess!! Close call...

Screening Opinion for the site
No longer 43fls. Looks to be 24fls now. 151-159 City Road, The proposal is for the erection of a 4 star hotel development with the provision of 247 bedrooms. Ancillary facilities would include a gym and spa at basement level and separate restaurant and bar at the top of the building which would be open to non staying guests. The angular nature of the Site's footphnt is reflected in the design of the proposal which projects upwards with a uniform height until the 16th fioor, at which point it chamfers away from Eagle House to the west and the Britania Building to the north., This means that the building is more slender at the top and when viewed from the eastern end of City Road, the top of the building is triangular in appearance. The facade design continues to play on the theme of angles as it is divided up into a series of diamond shapes. The building would have a gross external floor area of 20,091 sq m with 19 floors of hotel floorspace above ground, two floors in the basement and four floors of plant enclosed within the building envelope at the top. |

City Road hotel, Old Street, London by Squire and Partners
14 January, 2010 | By Richard Waite Squire and Partners has submitted plans for a 247-room luxury boutique hotel opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital in City Road, London The scheme for Soneva Properties will feature a business centre for small and medium-sized local businesses on its first floor and a sky-bar on its 17th floor. Describing the design of the scheme, a spokesman for the practice said: ‘Responding to the Moorfields Eye Hospital opposite, and taking inspiration from the 1980’s artworks of Bridget Riley, the facade is expressed as a triple glazed skin enlivened with differing patterns of transparency, opacity and solidity to convey diagonal slopes breaking across an underlying vertical structure. ‘Manipulation and modulation of light, both internally and externally, give the facade richness and an ever-changing face on this prominent site, as well as assisting solar performance to create a sustainable development. The conjunction of the vertical and the diagonal create a visual effect of depth and movement, and express the activities taking place within the building.’ |

Looks interesting and yet another hotel for London, obviously marketing towards the olympics. It almost looks gothic at night.

I'm ignoring the base for a moment and thinking that this would be greeted with open arms in Barcelona.
If we have a serious problem in LOndon ( and the UK ) its the greyness of it all . If it isn't glass its grey. So a dash of colour here and there would not be amiss- tastefully done . The base looks like they've stolen it from the bedroom of a teenager in a council flat in 1983. Argos ARchitecture. Last edited by EnglishKevin; January 15th, 2010 at 12:26 PM. |

Exactly, if anywhere can take an Alsop it's around here.

Indeed i wish these areas of London would take the bull by the horns and actually try and take London somewhere new rather than being subservient all the time, pussy footing about like the junior in Westminster planning dept.

Fully agree, it the right place for a bit of Alsop subversion. Shame the project was dumped. The S&P is a bit conventionnal but its sharpness will be its saving grace in the arrogant department. A bit too much already for Westminster guys!
