1.exciting proposal 2.planners like it, but could be a bit radical - all colour removed 3.local campaigners think it's too tall - 15 floors lopped off. 4.'cherished' view of St.Pauls from somewhere none of us have heard of 'ruined forever', i.e. ongar heights conservation point, (incidental story such as dickens ate a crumpet there while on a lovely picnic) - 5 floors removed 5.developer says, "now hang on there, we can't make a profit on that" - tower reconfigured - soaring tower becomes amorphous blob, perhaps overhanging street. Wider pavements, pedestrian elements removed. 6.Council says for such a large development 50% affordable housing and new youth centre have to be included. 7.developer says, "now hang on there, we can't make a profit on that " - developer makes savings on materials, tin replaces polished steel. Environmental parts axed. 8.nasty building follows, all involved parties agree how rubbish modern design is. General agreement also that their view wasn't heard. |

The mans designed a reasonably interesting building than had a laugh at our expense my daubing it in silly stripes.
It isn't serious - unless I'm missing the point. Can somebody clever help me get my head round this? I mean I can join in the craic, but they I get a bit lost...

I'm definately feeling the 80s vibe, the artwork on the base is reminiscent of some on one of the platforms of Embankment station (could be the Northern line platform), which was done in the 80s.
I don't know what to think, certainly very different, at first I was pretty horrified, but it's grown on me (in the last few hours) with a bit of refinement why not? It will add to that funky Shoreditch/Hoxton vibe. |

It's so bad i like it! Infact, I'm getting quite fond of it already
The coloured blocks at the base look truly epic, but the rest of the tower is a bit cut and paste aka Scottish Parliament. And I like that

The tower bit isn't actually that bad when you look at it but that base is just a complete mess and in the current status it should never get approval. Colour, used right, can look great and is welcome in a city where most of the buildings are grey.

Why!?...Why!?....WHY!?!?! ...do I like this? For some reason, even though this goes against anything I thought I had in terms of artistic principles...I really really want this to be built. |

Just saw this on BBC London in a clip about UNESCO trying to "protect" the Tower of London from tall buildings. I agree with Alsop that allowing tall buildings near the site is good for people, the economy etc. I've always had this image of Alsop as this hippy with long hair but he's nothing like it

I love it! Colourful, unusual and a good height at 151m. Maybe the base could do with a little work.

wow...I first thought someone had made a render using paint before I realized that itīs for real. I think a building of thins kind stands a 1% chance of getting built.

Personally I love it.
![]() 1. It has a fun, colourful, informal look. 2. Nice proportions, slim and elegant. 3. Excellent height... 43 storeys, this will really soar. 4. Decent location. This area badly needs some life breathing into it, something colourful and vibrant is needed. 5. I like the base and the lower floors, and how they face onto a busy traffic junction. There's just something funky and dramatic about it. Reminds me of Piccadilly Circus or Times Square, in a way. 5. The public viewing gallery will offer some absolutely jaw-dropping views of the City. 6. Being quite far north, it won't infringe on St Paul's or any other views. 7. The already approved Eagle House is literally next door. Could this be the start of a whole cluster...? In summary, I honestly can't fault this proposal and I'm totally in favour of it being built.

I take it you haven't seen any of Alsop's work before.

It looks somewhat Spanish to me. That's a good thing by the way. May have a link to the Miro-esque styling on the lower section.
I agree that it's not perfect, but hopefully this is only the first of many renders. I like it. It's fun. |

There's an article in this evening's Evening Standard on this tower (which is remarkably quick for them). It has been dubbed 'the doodle'.
The base above streetlevel doesn't have any windows as this is the storage space area. The artistic cladding is by Bruce McLean. |

I think itīs bad. It looks like Dubai x 10. The architect truly ran out of ideas so he just threw in akward colours and weird shapes to make it "special".

Well, it's weird (the moment I saw it I said WTF to myself) but rather not cheap-looking (which I think most Dubai proposals are). I like the idea of that glass top (top left corner) emerging from the red-black lower part.

god we all sounds like a bunch of boring old farts!
Dubai DOES NOT have this edgy flair! Not one bit so please dont compare the two. It is like comparing something produced by a St Martins College student with a slightly wacky top from New Look. This is hardly an area of historic view points so no need for toning down and the area is so dull save for a single Victorian building and a sudden glimpse of canal along a road that runs through a large slice of London that we should be rejoicing that something so spanking should be proposed. It may date it may be loved it may be listed who knows, but that is the joy of art! |
