Algiers underground network to reach 54 km by 2025

ALGIERS – Algiers underground network will reach in 2025 a linear of 54 km with the construction of new extension, currently under study, General Manager of Algiers Underground Company EMA Omar Hadbi said Thursday.

"The existing network will be extended to 18 km by January 2017 and to 40 km in 2020 before reaching a linear of functional lines of 54 km in 2025 and serving large parts of Algiers, while the western part of the capital will be served by the tram," said Hadbi on national radio.

According to the official, detailed studies before projects (ODA) of 54 km budgeted underground are in progress.

A first line connecting the Grande Post to Hai El Badr neighborhood on 9.5 km long and with ten stations, was inaugurated on 31 October 2011.

The equipment for the extension of the line I of Algiers underground, from Hai el Badr to El Harrach is under assembly and the works will be completed in December 2014 to be put into service in January 2015.

Extensions Hai el Badr -Ain Naadja and Tafoura-Martyrs Square will be operational in the first quarter of 2017, the same official added.

Studies for Oran underground, on a linear of 17 km with 20 stations have been completed and call to tenders should be launched in the first quarter 2014 and works will begin in early 2015.

"The construction of underground in other cities depends on transport demand estimated at more than 25 passengers per hour a volume that is achieved so far only in two major cities namely Algiers and Oran," he explained.

Archaeology: 1500-year history of Algiers announced at the Place des Martyrs

ALGIERS - A dated 5th century archaeological remains, for older , were unearthed at the site of rescue excavations under the current Martyrs Square , site of the future station museum of Algiers metro .

Adjacent to the prayer hall of the mosque , other metalwork workshops , paving and sidewalks of an ancient Roman and tiled floor " Beit el Mal " ( Public Treasury seat ) way which only a part has been the day .

This site should contain , according to the results of a survey operation conducted in the field of 2009-2013 , more than " 2000 years of history of Algiers " and buried bunk up to 50 years before our era the Hellenistic era of Juba II , "said project leader INRAP François Souq .

The remains were discovered buried at a depth of three meters, while polls show that remains is to find the "seven meters deep ," said the French archaeologist.

This post from the Algiers Metro thread at the Algerian Forum may give an idea of what the Place des Martyrs may look like once the excavations and construction of the Place des Martyrs Metro Station is finished.
