If they've already returned tram almost after 50 years, Why they don't reopened the closed routes of former tram network?

A remaining of the former tram network, could anybody say which place is this of Algiers?

Algiers is the first Algerian city which has returned its tram. Not only that, it is continuously extending, and has interchange facility with metro & suburban train. Great Progress. The blue and white colour livery has the similarity with my city Kolkata’s tram stock livery, although Algier’s tram is much much modern than Kolkata.

I’m happy to know that tram is overtaking metro, because tram network is double than metro network in Algiers. It proves that tram is the ultimate solution of a capital city also, if properly planned. It is cheap, safe & pollution free.

However I’ve a question – Is the new system uses the same alignment of old system? Or it is different? Please give some details.

It's harbour front ("fisherman wharf"), near the railway station, which is behind the photographer.
This photographer stood quite on the word "kara", looking to the north and top of the map :
https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.7...02411&t=h&z=19

It was probably before year 2000, a beautiful morning.

The tracks that you see are not exactly old tramways rails, but for the harbour service (no travellers, just goods).

But on the high boulevard on the left, there was a real tram line :

The real tram line you can see on the high boulevard on the left used to go towards -2 moulins-Try alger-roi.fr (in french only) you should find many documents on the old traamway network (les tramways algériens) when Algeria was a French colony that is before 1962-I think the last tram in Algiers ran in 1959....regards.....

I have found this map of old time :
http://alger-roi.fr/Alger/transports...arte1_cfra.jpg

- Dark lines are narrow gauge suburban trams or trains with little steam engines and some carriages around Algiers, going along the roads. (CFRA means Chemins de Fer sur Route d'Algerie / railways on roads in Algeria)
These lines run from 1894 to 1935

- Light lines with letters PLM ("Paris Lyon Marseille" railway company) are not suburban trains, but standard gauge intercity lines.

There was just one urban electrified tramway line (TA, Tramway of ALgiers), following more or less the coast in central Algiers, with two branchs on one extremity (no more than 10/12 km)

A+

None.
The central section of CFRA was electrified and run through central Algiers on the high boulevard along harbour front,
an urban tramways (TA) run on parallele boulevard, few hundred meter inside the land,
but sorry I did'nt find map of this tramway line.

Algiers light rail reaches Dergana
Monday, June 15, 2015

THE fourth phase of Algiers' light rail network was inaugurated on June 14, when Algeria's transport minister Mr Boudjema Talai launched public services on the eastern extension of Line 1 from Kahouat Echergui to Dergana

The 2.7km extension includes three new stations and is expected to boost ridership on Line 1 to around 185,000 passengers per day. Services are operated by a fleet of 40m-long Alstom Citadis low-floor LRVs

Algiers is continuously extending its tram network. At last it has been the eastern extension has done upto Dergana. The system clearly shows us that for a proper city planning, overcrowding is not a problem. Almost 4 million inhabitants, Algiers is definetly overcrowded. But the tram system is completely on-street based, neither elevated nor underground, but running through partly pedestrianised street, and parly on reserved track, prohibited for other vehicles. There is even a new beautiful cable stayed bridge for tram only.

First generation network was also modern, with articulated trams and tram platforms. But it was on mixed traffic, so foolish government and traffic department removed it, but they were not interested to restrict or decrease motor cars or buses.

However, at last lots have changed in sixty years, and I hope, some of my Algerian grandfathers, who were baby before 1959, are still alive, and happy to see that in 2011, tram has returned again in Algiers.

The Algiers Tramway is a vivid example of a cheap, safe and pollution-free typical city transport.

Is there any extension planned?
