Prague: National Library of Czech Republic

The National Library of the Czech Republic will be built on the edge of Letna Plain according to Future Systems Atelier (England) of the Czech born architekt Jan Kaplicky. His project won in the competition of 400 other designs. The building will be 9 stories tall and has a shape of a widened piramid with rounded edges. Storage for 10 million books will be underground. The color changes just like that of a champaign said the architekt, from yellow green at the bottom to almost white at the top. The large eye at the top is looking at the City of Prague, on one side on Prague Castle on the other on Old Town square. The building will cost approximatelly 2 billion crowns to built (100 mil dollars).

Competition Results

1. místo 160.000 € Future Systems Velká Británie

2. místo 120.000 € Carmody Groarke Velká Británie

3. místo 70.000 € HŠH architekti Česká republika

4. místo 35.000 € EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe USA

5. místo 30.000 € John Reed Architecture USA

^ looks like a typical future systems design; organic looking and roundish.
it is odd, but i actually like this one. it looks, well, futuristic.

ugly, tacky, now it looks new, but in 10 years it will look old-fashioned and just plain hideous.

Looks like Slimer from ghostbusters with the chickenpox. Or amybe a giant booger with some acid burns.

I hope the come to their senses. The second design is really quite attractive.

I think it is inspired by circus tent shape. Letná park is established place where circuses present they performance so it could work.
Though I don't understand why jurors look at models only from birds view and not from street level which is much more important.

It seems like the Central Europe has some kind of serious architectural issue. Look at Warsaw's MOMA. Now this, IMHO, almost the worst project was chosen.Or the model just looks weird Still there is hope for rebellious Warsaw, but Prague seems to like its own art ...

I prefer the spherical model (the silvery one).
In my opinion, it would make the area a lot more 'edgy'

That tent/ameba-ish model is a little to abstract for my liking.

Absolutely hideous. That color, that shape... And here I thought Czechs knew how to appreciate good architecture.

More like National Drug Research Center.

But seriously, this doesn't look good. And if the same colors as on this model are kept, then... Barf.

Sorry I hate it. Looks like a green blob of god-knows-what. Design #3 is much better.
