Well you have to remember that Pudong is NOT downtown Shanghai. Puxi is far more dense (and has a lot more skyscrapers too). Pretty much every building on the left bank of the river in that pic is less than 15 years old except for the low-rise housing. Give 'em some time and it will fill up. It's only 5-10 years ago that Pudong was considered a joke area that would never take off at all...

I find that Pudong has 'bald spots' too but I believe that has more to do with the urban planning of Pudong. Unlike New York and all those other cities you mentioned, Pudong was planned with large plots of land divided by wide roads.

I don't quite like that idea of planning as commuters must rely on cars instead of walking. I also don't like how each building in Pudong doesn't take advantage of the entire plot of land.

Yes, totally agree, urban planning of Pudong is a complete failure.

I've got two questions. First, are there two elevators going up the sides to the top of the hole, or is there just one on one side? Also, will the elevator(s) be facing out so you can see outside as you rise?

For example, one elevator on One Nationwide Plaza in my hometown is on the outside of the building (left of the photo):

Corner elevators on both sides, going up directly to the top.

Those corner elevators are only for going directly to the observatory levels (94-100), offices and hotel have elevators inside the core.

Wow, those are some huge braces for the observation deck. Yeah, I imagine there won't be much deflection on that cantilever
