On the footage, the fire was on levels 40-50 and smoke getting out on top, so you might be right.

Fire At Shanghai World Financial Center Extinguished
14 August 2007

SHANGHAI (AP)--Fire broke out Tuesday at the site of China's future tallest building, but it was extinguished after more than an hour without any reported casualties, state media said.

An initial investigation showed that the blaze at the Shanghai World Financial Center in the heart of the city's Pudong financial district was started by welding work, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Eight fire trucks had been dispatched to douse the fire, which broke out about 4:30 p.m. local time (0830 GMT) in an elevator shaft on the 40th floor, Xinhua said, citing the Shanghai municipal public security bureau. It was extinguished at 5:45 p.m. (0945 GMT).

No injuries or deaths were reported, the public security bureau said.

The fire was just the latest travail to face the wedge-shaped tower, being built at a cost of $910 million. The concrete, steel, and glass tower is due to be finished in 2008, when its 101 stories will loom 1,614 feet (492 meters) over China's business hub.

For six years after ground was broken at the site in the mid-1990s, the project was little more than a hole in the ground: The Asian financial crisis had virtually obliterated demand for new office space in Shanghai.

After the project was revived in 2003, the builders had to alter a key design feature - a circular cutout near the top - after complaints that it resembled the rising sun on Japan's flag, a symbol reviled by many Chinese because of Japan's brutal occupation of the country in World War II.

And earlier this year, the tower's builder, the Mori Building Co. of Tokyo, were criticized by Shanghai authorities for altering the project's name to "Shanghai Hills" to link it to its other marquee projects, the famed Roppongi Hills and Omotesando Hills complexes.

The company said the formal registered name of the project remained the Shanghai World Financial Center and "Shanghai Hills" was merely a branding strategy.

The windows could have been broken by workers trying to disperse the smoke. But man, imagine if there had been enough pressure in there to burst those windows...

Luckily there were no casualties. Hopefully only the windows were broken and no serious damage has been done to the structure.

That isn't one of China's constructions sites. That wasn't even a construction site, period.

Thank god no one was hurt! I wonder how severe the damage is from the fire? Hopefully this will not delay the construction for long.

This morning, columns were at level 99/~461m, and the temporary structure inside the hole was slightly above the columns, maybe bottom of top skybridge = 470m, but no pics to be more precise.

So let's stay with the heigth of columns = 461m.

I was there taking pics of SWFC right when it started. The whole ordeal lasted about 30 minutes. You could see small little fires through broken windows at the corner of the building, and a huge fire at the base of the building.

Still looks strange with the windows broken BELOW the place where all this happened. It couldn't be done by high temperature then (hot air goes upward, not downward). Maybe it was caused by falling parts of elevator or something. Also I doubt if the windows were broken by workers when the fire was still not extinguished, b/c it makes the situation even more dangerous (gives oxygen from the bottom part and makes stronger draft). But if workers' lives were in danger, they could do that.
