More I see that temporary structure and more I think the top part is not the skybridge yet, but a support for constructing it. Thus, the top part seems to be level 100 floor @ 472m.

Stunning views

It's a real giant from so far away

And it confirms my impression: the top is all temporary structure, the hole looks at higher proportion in the renderings.

Do you really think the government might have told them to do it? Why would they want to do that for?

I dont think arson is the reason for the fire but if we assume the government did it then the reason maybe is they want the world to know that they can extinguish a big fire to one of the tallest buildings in the world for only one hour However, I don't think they want to do that to an iconic building that is almost completed. Good job for extinguishing the fire though.

Gaeus, you hit the nail on the head. Extinguishing a fire in a building under construction is very difficult, even more so when it is one of the tallest on the planet, but especially when there are multiple fires on several separated floors.
Great job by the Shanghai firefiighters.

I have to admit that I like the Burj Dubai project very much so. But, I favor this building by far more then the Burj. I think the hundreds of pictures speak for them selves. I've been waiting for this building since 1997 and now that it's construction is near an end it's like a dram come true. It just took almost a decade.

You can see how far away those shots were taken from, and why Jin Mao isn't visible here (Google Maps): http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&...&t=h&z=12&om=0

By the way, it looks like about 20 miles away.

Love the pictures from Shanghai Pudong. I wonder why it's called Pudong since it looks really far away from the real Pudong. Anyway, this building is a Monster.

Edit: Nevermind, it looks fairly close on Google Maps.

Considering the bad press associated with China these days(food quality, bridge collapse, air quality, toy recalls, etc.), I seriously doubt this fire was planned. The country is about to take center stage with the Olympics coming and is going to use this platform to reintroduce China to the World. The last thing they want is any type of negative press right now.
