The 'commie blocks' are to do with practically and profit - if a developer spent millions, or even billions, glossing up (in many cases) 20-60 towers, people would still complain that they all "looked the same" (think suburban American), whilst they wouldn't actually drive property prices up high enough to justify spending that amount making them look "good".

Making each tower block look different from the next one is impractical, and would also look very poor.

That, at least, is Hong Kong's case.
*Sigh* You misinterpreted me! I was pointing to Hong Kong as a GOOD example of what a free market can produce! Hong Kong is the shit!!

Ah?

But Hong Kong is filled with disgustingly ugly looking commie blocks (that I won't deny)

Perhaps so, but the sheer volume of incredible looking tall buildings (even the relatively bland Cheung Kong Center) in Hong Kong make it look absolutely splendid.

That's partly true - I've always said the Hong Kong skyline looks ugly during the day. During the night, it's the mixture of the mountains behind and the lights that, literally, illuminate the skyline.

Regarding the Cheung Kong Centre, it may just be a box, but it's night-time lights make it one of the most appealing sights in Hong Kong - which distinguishes it from other boxes (Aon, the WTC's, although it may lack their height).

Even during the day, it's glassy fašade gives it a (personally) more appealing look than other boxes.

Exactly -- only in Hong Kong would such a beautiful building be "relatively" bland.

The Bank of China building to Cheung Kong's right (in that pic) would have made a fantastic supertall/highrise..shame it's so short :d

Wouldn't go in so well with the rest of the skyline, though I could see it fitting well in Chicago/NYC.
