Its working. I guess you haven't read about the successful reforestation China has done, and the massive green energy plants China has built from windpower, hydro to solar. China's government also shut down hundreds of factories that were big polluters of the rivers and the air. Changes needs time to fully see the result you can't just start a clean up project and expect to see a difference the next day.

The proof is in the hundreds of recent photos posted in this thread.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6265098.stm

I'll grant you that Shanghai is not China's most polluted city (although 16 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are in China), but just look at the thick, gray, poisonous air in the majority of pics posted here.

I'm well aware of the steps China is taking to become more sustainable (such as shutting down the worst plants/factories and building wind farms). But when you compare such efforts to China's simultaneous building of 50 new coal-burning power plants, the skyrocketing automobile use and the increasing levels of consumption, the green steps China is taking, though admirable, are like shooting bee-bees at oncoming locomotive of environmental destruction.

Great to see this finally top out! Now I'm just waiting for the cladding to catch up.

Yes it is true that the Chinese government is doing a lot to save the environment but RandySavage was right with the explosion of car usage, and building a new coal power plant a week, every week, for the next couple years it is like trying to put out a forest fire by spitting on it.

According to China's official Xinhua News Agency:
SWFC will formally top off on 14 Sep. 2007.
So it's wrong to say the building has topped off.

i can't believe i'm finally seeing this building completed. i'm disappointed they didn't stick with the original circular-hole design as i felt it was more striking, but whatever. it still looks great.

Will the temporary bracing in the hole be taken down some time soon? Or will it stay there until the top portion is clad and completed?

You will not succeed unless you succeed in preventing people from buying cars. Make cars ridiculously expensive, so that only millionaires can afford them. Owning a car should not be a human right, it's a privilege, just like owning a private jet.

Yah, exactly like how cars are priced so high in America and Chicago? Oh, they aren't? And the US government subsidizes ethanol production from corn at the expense of worldwide food pricing that impacts hundreds of millions of people?
I see -- you just want to point fingers at China and their 'horrible environmental impact' without putting any perspective to current or historical realities about modern industrialization.

Is there a way to request a site rules/regulations revisions to add a line that says 'I will not make comments about the environment of a particular country based on photos unless I'm prepared to back them up with data about said country as well as an equitable macro solution for improving the environment.' Since I've yet to hear an equitable worldwide/macro solution for saving the environment hopefully this will shut people up from the 'OMG, China is so [email protected]#$#@!oneone' posts.

EDIT - By the way, the building is (still) GORGEOUS! I'm definately looking forward to my next trip to Shanghai to check it out.
