big dog, your stitched pic is absolutely amazing. stitching is clearly a great way to maintain the sense of scale yet doesn't distort.

Clear sky.......I thought Shanghai is supposed to be covered in smog. In the West I only see pictures when there is bad pollution.

^ Shanghai, like most large Chinese cities, suffers from chronic industrial pollution. However it depends on the direction of the wind. If the wind blows in from the highly industrialised Yangste River Delta then the city appears smoggy. If it blows in from the sea then it's clear. I have enjoyed some fantastically clear days in Shanghai but also witnessed horrendous smog.

Affected? It's not like some kind of illness, you know. The fertility of loess soil (I know it doesn't look fertile in the above pic, but diluted in the Yellow River it made whole regions productive) is what allowed the early chinese civilization to grow in the first place. And no, loess is only in the north.

No sir, in English you say "affected by an illness" (but not: "affected by a type of soil").

Very nice photos! Shanghai impresses me so much becoming one of my favorites cities worldwide due to construction of beautiful jewels such as the SWFC (almost done) !

Congrats to all of the citizens and contributors of this city !

I can't believe it's almost completed...loved every moment of the construction from the ground up.

Damn I want to have sex with this tower...the hole's big enough.

Peloso: you are mistaken; "affect" is an extremely versatile word that means "have effect upon" or "change the outcome of". Its usage for describing illness is more idiomatic than its more common usage (defined above) which is completely appropriate in this case. Loess has an effect upon Beijing, so Beijing can be maleficently affected by Loess. Certainly though you are correct in saying that you can be "affected by an illness". Comdot could have been more specific by saying "Is Shanghai's atmosphere affected by Loess?" but I think for the forum's sake, we are being too picky.
