i know all this. perhaps you confuse 'affected' with 'infected'.

i was not referring to its presence but to it as dust in the atmosphere.

By golly. Not again.
You cannot say in English "affected by loess". It makes no sense at all. It's like saying "affected by trees" or "affected by the sea". At most one could say "affected by loess sandstorms". Conversely, you can and will usually say "affected by pneumonia" or "arthritis", or a phenomenon, for that matter - but not by something that's absolutely passive in its nature. "Infected" is a word with a totally different meaning.

yes you can...

you can say pretty much anything like that when said in a particular context and the context here was air pollution. you seem to know something about loess, does it blow over shanghai and hang in the air? it does in beijing.

No, just in the north, where it hangs not just in the air, but also out in bars and discos. That is, when his buddy the wind accompanies him, otherwise he tends to stay home.
More on topic (yet not completely on topic): what building is the one u/c in this pic, left side?image hosted on flickr

Interesting. But I can't find any thread about it. Could you indicate one? Or is there none?

You know how the top section of Jin Mao glows at night. Instead of just lighting up the top part only they should light up the entire building the same way.

I think a lot of people do not realise how truly massive/big/tall this building is. I quickly created a comparison. Although it is not the WTB, this building in many ways still looks taller than the others.

Important note: The images I used here are from www.skyscraperpage.com and are copyrighted. I only used them for purposes of illustration. I see people here using SSP images lots of times and they do not seem to be criticised for that. However, I will take the image down immediately if anyone objects.

Here is the image to compare this building with other tall buildings: Comparison
