I really think this is one of the best skyscrapers in Shanghai. Not because of the height but because unlike so many other buildings in Shanghai it doesn't rely on a fancy crown to make it attractive. Instead its architectural quality comes from its overall elegant, simplistic yet striking, tapering form.

Even if these skyscrapers are closer to the epicenter, they would still hold up to it. Im sure that something like SWFC, IFC, Taipei 101, etc.. would hold up even if a quake were to stike very close - Probably with some damage but its most likely they wouldnt collapse. These extremely tall buildings actually tend to hold up better to these massive quakes than the much smaller buildings that arent using the extreme engineering that is used to build these biggies.

The structures of these massive towers absorb a lot of the shaking (especially when they are equipped with dampners). It was widely believed that the higher up you are the more intense the shaking - And its actually the opposite. This actually is a relatively new finding apparently.

Most of the buildings that collapsed were un-reinforced and not made like what we are looking at in the bigger cities.

A little off topic, but -

Are there still hotel rooms located in the Oriental Pearl Tower?

im actually not sure lol, i heard there are hotels in OPT in the main shaft (between the two balls, whatever you call it :p )

swfc also has that wind absorption thing, dunno if that helps with earthquakes @@ what am i talking about lol

Quote:

Installed anti-wind tuned mass dampers on the 90th floor
To improve occupants’ comfort in strong wind conditions – particularly in hotel and office spaces – two mass dampers were installed on the ninetieth above ground floor. The mass dampers use sensors to detect any swaying of the building and connects with a computer controlled, 150-ton counterweight suspended within the equipment by wire rope. In this way, the swaying problem of building is kept in control

Photos has been taken of SWFC from this angle since it was 50 meters tall - who's the photographer, and will someone please make timelapse animation out of all the photos?
