Were people hurt during the fire? Because it looks huge in those pictures.

What a beautiful building - Shanghai's finest and one of the world's finest too.

Here is a BBC interview with developer Mori:

Taking the measure of the SWFC Steady in the wind

By Liang Yiwen and Lu Feiran | 2008-8-29 | NEWSPAPER EDITION

SHANGHAI'S newest skyscraper is protected by high-tech equipment against earthquakes, high winds, fires and terrorist attacks.

Tests validated by the Seismic Safety Office of China's Ministry of Construction showed that the Shanghai World Financial Center can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9, well above Shanghai's required 7-level.

The building is supported by 2,271 piles drilled deep into the ground, and a 4.5-meter-thick slab sits atop the pile foundation.

Inverted-trapezoid wind tunnels were installed in the rectangular rooftop opening to reduce wind-induced roof pressure.

Two 150-ton counterweights were installed on the 90th floor to reduce building sway and control vibration caused by high winds.

To ensure the safety of the building and the people inside, the center uses smart-card locks on each floor, and hand luggage will be screened by metal detectors mounted on the entrance to the observatory. Seven floors can be used as evacuation floors in the event of fires.

94, 97, 100F - Sky Walks

THE Shanghai World Financial Center's three observatory decks will open to the public at 2pm tomorrow.

They are located on the 94th, 97th and 100th floor, which soars 474 meters above the ground. Visitor volume is expected to reach 3 million a year.

Sightseers will pay 150 yuan (US$22) to visit all three decks. For those who will be happy with a slightly lower view, the cost is 110 yuan to visit the 94th floor and 97th floor, and 100 yuan for just the 94th floor.

The 100th floor, 55 meters long and with a partially transparent glass walkway that affords dramatic sights, is the highest observatory deck in the world. It eclipses the city's other main venues for panoramic views, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower at 263 meters and the 88th floor of Jin Mao Tower at 341 meters.

Among the building's other features, the 97th floor deck has a glass ceiling that can be opened to bring in fresh air. The 94th floor observatory, which has an 8-meter-high ceiling, is a versatile space that can be used for events and exhibitions.

79-93F - Hotel

The Park Hyatt Shanghai, which occupies the 79th to 93rd floors, is scheduled to open on September 1.

The hotel dwarfs the former world's highest inn, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, which is located on the 53rd to the 87th floor of the neighboring Jin Mao Tower.

The Park Hyatt also refreshes several other records, such as the world's highest swimming pool on the 85th floor and Century Avenue, the world's highest restaurant, bar and private dining room on floors 91 through 93.

The restaurant, which will open at the end of October, will have a minimum banquet charge of 600 yuan per person. Room prices will range from 5,000 yuan to 88,000 yuan per night in the hotel's 174 guest rooms, which sets another record.

7-77F - Offices

Each floor comprises 3,300 square meters of office space, with ceiling heights of 2.8 meters plus a 15-centimeter raised ceiling.

Connected by fiber-optic cables from a wide range of carriers, the office area features comprehensive security systems and facilities that include back-up power generators, chilled water supply and 24-hour tenant-managed air conditioning. Mobile phones can be used in all areas of the building.

Daily rent is US$3 per square meter. So far, 45 percent of the office space has been rented out, and the occupancy rate is expected to reach 90 percent in a year.

28-29F - Media Center

In addition to its role as a financial center and high-end hotel, the skyscraper aims to function as an information exchange hub. A media center located on the 28th and 29th floor features a full range of audio-visual facilities, including a television studio, a conference hall and an upscale lounge space.

3-5F - Forum Space

The 3,000-square-meter Forum Space is divided into meeting rooms of various sizes. The largest, at 800 square meters, is designed to host international conferences. All conference rooms can be divided into 18 separate areas depending on the configuration options selected.

B2-B1F, 2-3F - Shopping Mall

Fifty shopping and restaurant outlets including Starbucks, Xiaonanguo and Tokyo Dining will be opened in a commercial area covering 10,000 square meters. About 75 percent of the tenants will be restaurants and cafes to meet the needs of the building's office workers.

B1-B3, 1F - Parking

The building offers underground parking for 1,100 cars.

The parking lot is open 24 hours and charges 10 yuan for up to an hour and 5 yuan for each 30 minutes thereafter.

excellent video, but wonder why SWFC was never broadcasted in BBC channel on TV, so more people can know about this tower, BBC never broadcasts anything outside UK anyway. This tower's location is the perfect location (shanghai) if this was built in HK it would've been less suitable.
