Might as well put some horns (spires) on this puppy, and make it 530 meters high, just to beat out Taipei 101. Have to move fast though as Burj is right on its heels.

couldn't agree more! having "horns" or whatever on the top of this will ruin it's look. they should've added extra floors in the early design stages if they wanted the temporary tallest building title.

Yes. As Culwulla has established many times before, they could easily add twin spires to the building to reach 510 metres just to surpass Taipei 101.

when a building is externally completed and opened thats when it goes from UC to completed, and only then it can become a "new" tallest ect. thats what rules are on Emporis.
Ive said it a million times. SWFC deserves to be a WTB. It only needs twin 18m spires to achieve this.I know the design is always better then achieving more height but ie been follwoing this since early 1990;s, when it was to be 460m and WTB but it stalled. now even higher at 492m and its still short of current WTB. but it has highest roof (492m) and highest ob deck (470m) until Burj dubai is officially completed in 2009.

what do ya reckon?
just a quick diagram but it shows just tiny 18m spires will grab title.
if they were to be proportionate, they could be increased to 40-50m.

they could be gold plated. they could be stainles steel round of pryamidal. or braced framing /doesnt matter .wont see them much anyway.
melbournes melbourne central looks good with its spires.
It was originally designed WITHOUT them.

Perhaps this helps to see how far the construction has progressed to this moment.

If they have to put a spire, something like this one would be more apropriate (me think)

The model is in the Info Center of the SWFC, which will be demolished after completion of the tower. I hope they will give the models a special place in the tower because they are beautiful.

Regarding the progress, I think they have reached the yellow line in the section. The zig-zag shaped cross-bracing with the scaffolding around it (in the picture at the top of this page) would then be the two grey floors under the yellow line. If I'm correct they still have some way to go before they start with the hole.

The Info Center also features a 1:100 scale model which is (logically) almost 5 meters tall. Besides that, they have several models of other skyscrapers around the world and some larger models of specific parts like the top section in my previous post. It's a bit like the information center in Dubai where they have a similar model of the Burj Dubai. That one on the other hand takes two floors since it is some 8,5 meters tall...

When you look at the scale model below, the cross-bracing is visible several floors below the hole. I think some people mix up that cross-bracing with the one that's just below the hole.

great stuff dasilwil. im a model maker by trade, and that 5m model is awesome,
i never knew the upper levels were set out like that. brilliantt. a huge void.
is that a car i see on lev94 in the large model?
ive scaled that diagram you posted and the current height-to pink section= 423m. pretty accurate. other measurments = lev97 bridge= 436m high- (which is height of sears towers roof) , lev100 bridge= 472m. width of tower= 82m.
chappo- the hotel floors range from lev79-93 which is 336m-423m.

thanks

That's indeed a car on the 94th floor. It's visible from the picture below of the other side of that model where they left out the construction. As you can see there will be several cars... in fact it will be something like a showroom of a car manufacturer I don't remember. I don't really know how they will get the cars up (or down whenever necessary).

Here are some extra pictures that might interest you. The last one is from the huge model of the Shanghai Urban Planning Center, which is worth a visit.

The official site also features some nice things, like a couple of pictures of the bridges:

And there's an interesting movie about the mass damper as well:

I you check the most recent updates posted in this thread (june 24), you can see that level 93 is topped out, so your yellow line hasn't to be zig-zaged

Whatta model!

------------------------

Anyways, why does this building's design always strike me as looking like the end of a broomstick?
