maybe some low-rises?
I reckon filling it with some native trees would be great. Needs more greenery.

To feed the discussion, some extra pictures :-)

The first is from the Info Center of the World Financial Center

These next ones are from the Urban Planning Center. The first one from the Huangpu River and Pudong area. The next two are of the big model.

Shanghai to break own high-rise gas record
21 June 2007
Shanghai Daily

Natural gas will be pumped to as high as the 93rd floor in the under-construction Shanghai World Financial Center, breaking a world record now held by the nearby Jin Mao Tower.

Gas will supply a restaurant on the 93rd floor when the 101-story, 492-meter-high Shanghai World Financial Center, in Pudong's Lujiazui financial zone, starts operations next year.

The announcement was made by Yang Shihong, of the Shanghai Gas Engineering Design & Research Co which is in charge of the design work for building's gas-supply system.

This will be about 20 meters higher than the present record - at the top of the 88-story, 420.5-meter-high Jin Mao - according to Yang.

"Why we supply gas to this height is because we want to ensure the taste of Chinese cuisine, which could suffer if cooked by electricity," Yang said at a gas-equipment exhibition yesterday.

Yang said per-hour gas supply could reach 16 cubic meters in the restaurant on the 93rd floor, enough to cater for 50 people.

Yang, citing their own survey, said most of the world's tallest skyscrapers use electricity rather than gas for cooking.

For those that do use gas, like Taipei 101 in Taiwan and Malaysia's Petronas Towers, supply height falls well short of that in Jin Mao.

Yang said the largest challenge in building the gas-supply system is not technology, but safety. "We have to solve problems like fire, quakes and leaks .. all the risks grow as the height grows."

It's a big city, they should fill all those green areas with supertalls.
