Balay Kalinungan It seems like only yesterday when Balay Kalinungan opened its doors in 1991, to serve the students of La Salle and other groups who needed a place for their retreats, seminars and other activities. The place was so well run that, before long, even government workers and other entities availed of its services for their conferences and mini-conventions. At that time the Balay Kalinungan Negros Foundation headed by Cecilia Lopez, was operating the facility. This year the time had come to turn over the operations of the facility to the University of St La Salle. The formal Turnover and Acceptance rites were held at the Sanctuario de La Salle during an elegant dinner attended by specially invited guests. The ceremonies began with the Opening Prayer song and Pambansang Awit by the awesome USLS Chorale. China Gallaga welcomed the guests and gave the Remarks of Circumstance. Everyone enjoyed the superb dinner which was a culinary feast that had the diners coming back for seconds. On hand to entertain the guests were the USLS Chorale and special numbers performed by the youths of Bahay Pagasa. Listening to their musical performance, it was hard to believe that these youths were formerly troubled youngsters who are now being rehabilitated at the Bahay Pag-asa. Dory Ledesma read the Turnover resolution while Bro. Ray Suplido FSC, gave the response. This was followed by the Unveiling of the Markers and the distribution of the Plaques of Appreciation. The closing remarks by Bro. Gus Boquer was filled with nostalgia about the good old days and the wonderful friends who showed they truly cared and who helped with the Balay Kalinungan. His remarks touched the hearts of many who were there.*

National dance congress in Bacolod SESSIONS on festival management and creative movement await participants to the 16th national dance congress and the "araw ng sayaw" (Philippine celebration of international dance day) from April 27 to 29 at the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod gymnasium and Panaad Stadium, respectively. Intended for dance educators, choreographers of local government units (LGUs), tourism officers and festival organizers, the congress has identified three objectives: defining the significance of festivals and street dancing in community development, defining the contribution of street dance to the development of dance in the Philippines and crafting guidelines to redirect festivals towards a culture-based celebration. Topics on festival management include publicity and promotion, economic/tourism value of the festivals, community involvement/collaboration and festival as showcase of local culture. Key speakers from the Kalibo's Ati-Atihan ('Festival and Street Dance, the Beginning'), Iloilo's Dinagyang, Bacolod's Masskara and Negros Oriental's Buglasan ('Sharing Experiences on Street Dances of the Visayan Festivals') are also slated. Other topics include LGU/institutional support for festival, planning and organizing a festival: cultural/aesthetic value of street dance and concept/theme building for festivals, costumes and props, music, keeping the festival creative and exciting and festivals and the development of dance in the Philippines. Choreographers, on the other hand, would undergo sessions on creative movement to culminate with a showcase. The congress will end with a session on synthesis/areas for policy consideration. A special session on grants and other assistance program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) would also be held. Keynote speaker for the congress opening ceremonies is Ricky de Ungria, head of the NCAA sub-commission on the arts. Shirley Halili-Cruz, NCCA dance committee chair and congress over-all project and artistic director, will give the rationale of the congress. The dance congress and "araw ng sayaw" is a flagship project of the NCAA dance committee in partnership with Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, the provincial government of Negros Occidental, the city government of Bacolod and Negros Island Tourism Inc. Theme is "Festivals: A celebration of the Filipino bayanihan" with sub-theme "A discourse on the Visayan festivals." Registration fee is P500. Package rate to include pension or hotel accommodation, meals and snacks may be coursed to Oliver Dondonay at 433-8343. Hard copies of invitation letter are now available at the local secretariat office, Office of Vice President for Student Affairs at CSA-B. For confirmation of attendance, fax to Francis de los Santos of NCCA at (02) 527-2198/522-2084 or to Novy Radislao at (034) 434-5365. Contact 434-2471 local 106 or 40 for inquiries.

Bacoleño artist sets 33rd solo exhibition Bacoleño artist Charlie Co paints what he called “Visual Diary”, regarding what he sees and feels, depicting any space and time, in his 33rd solo exhibition entitled “Time + Space” at the Alliance Francaise de Manille’s Total Gallery April 21, a press release from organizers said. Co shows a collection of nine works done from 2002 to 2008, of his interpretations of events that happened during this period. Known for his vivid colors, Co tells his stories into canvass with his own style. Collectively, his works emit powerful imagery that can provoke the viewers’ minds to think and beckon them to see the world as he sees it, the press release said. Co, a founding member of the Black Artists in Asia, is from Bacolod, where he lives and works. He was a CCP Thirteen Artists awardee in 1990, and has represented the Philippines in the Sao Paolo Biennial and the Asia Pacific Triennial in Australia in 1996. He is presently represented by Osage Gallery of Hong Kong and has held exhibitions in its galleries in Beijing, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, the press release said. Artists’ reception will be at the Alliance Française de Manille’s Total Gallery on Monday, and cocktails will be served at 6:30 pm. Exhibit ends May 9. For high resolution images of the artworks and more details about the said exhibit, interested parties may call Olivier Dintinger (AFM Director) or Earl Parco (Cultural-PR Officer) at Tel. Nos. 895-7441 and 895-7585, or email to odintinger@alliance.ph or cultural@alliance.ph, the press release added.*

Some structures are better off if they are left as ruins. Examples are Acropolis and St Paul's in Macao. In the Philippines, the best ruins are in Corregidor. Dingras church was formerly an outstanding ruins, according to a Mr. Galvan, until it was roofed over. Mr. Galvan also commented that the greatest threat to ruins in the Philippines is the tendency to "beautify" by rebuilding.

I was in Bacolod last week for the 8th Iyas Creative Writing Workshop and had the opportunity to visit Talisay and Silay City. Most of the old houses are still intact and I especially liked the Gaston House as well as "The Ruins --- Ledesma-Lacson house."
I plan to go back hopefully later this year, as I wasn't able to see all the houses in Silay. I'm sure I missed some other houses and I would like to eat at El Ideal Restaurant.

By the way, just realized that I have Bacolod roots. My father grew up in Bacolod and I still have some relatives in the area. My long time Bacolod-based friend happens to be my distant cousin.
