You know changing the UWM name to something else isn't going to change the fact that UWM's sports programs are being played in a small division 1a conference (the Horizon league) in basketball. Move UWM's Sports programs into a higher level conference like Conference USA, or the Mid-American conference and start up a football program and some other high level sport (I started a thread on why there isn't another hockey program in the non development section) Then UWM will get more name recognition.

One big factor will always be in UW Madison's favor is the fact that U of Wisconsin is a charter member of the BIG TEN. The BIG TEN is one of the major college conferences and UWM will never be a member of that conference unless something like the parting of Lake Michigan were to take place.

A name change for UWM isn't going to change anything unless UWM moves its sports programs to a more prestigious league. edsq25 mentioned schools of the like of University of Pittsburgh, University of Louisville, University of Memphis and University of Houston each of those schools play in a higher level league. (Pitt and Louisville in the Big East and Memphis and Houston in Conf USA). They also play in both Football and Basketball and other sports as well in those conferences too. Until UWM playes Football and moves into a higher level league then there really is no need to change the name of UWM to something else. A change of name means nothing. Moving into a higher level league will change whatever lack of prestige UWM may have now.

Do you see many parallels between UWM's status and fellow Horizon member UIC's status? There is a definite similiarity between the Milwaukee-Madison and the Chicago-Champaign relationships.

I believe though that UIC appears to be a more high profile university than UWM which negatges some of the challenges it feels in regard to the state's flagship university.

One of the major reasons UWM doesn't and probably wont have a extramural football team is because of the bias on the Board of Regents. UWM will never receive funding for one because that'll just bring them "closer in status" to Madison, or atleast thats how they see it.

Where would UWM play? I always wondered that.

UW-Madison rises in MBA rankings . . . from 31 up to 29.
