it seems common sense to me. if one city can't keep up with demand there is potential another city will at least accommodate some of it. i don't believe another part of london can take on this demand in full, i mean i don't think all these apartments and office space can move to other boroughs. some of it will move to other parts of london, some to towns in the south east and some to cities elsewhere in the uk. and of course some- but it seems less- will eventually go on this site in croydon. i'm being so negative because i would like to see an improvement. schemes like this being rejected cause countryside in the commuter belt to be concreted over with identikit houses and also people to live further away from jobs.

Developer puts Croydon project on hold after council recommends it be refused permission

Developer Menta has withdrawn its application for its £500m Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon, following the council official's decision to recommend it be refused planning permission.

The Make Architects-designed scheme was to have contained four tower blocks of up to 35 storeys and include homes, offices and shops.

Craig Marks said “We are very disappointed that after a lengthy pre-application and consultation process, during which we did everything we could to meet the council's objectives for this important location, the council did not feel able to support the application at this late stage in the process. This left us with no option but to withdraw.

Marks said he would continue to work with the council to establish a way forward for the scheme. He said: “In particular we will be interested to see what may emerge during the East Croydon Masterplanning initiative, of which we are a part, to unlock this important site and deliver equivalent regeneration outputs to the proposals we have brought forward.”
Translation: we'll submit a new proposal containing a similar amount of floorspace, but with a watered-down design and nothing taller than 100m.

Its pretty disappointing that this development has'nt been given the green light, however at least the developer does'nt appear to of thus far acted on his previous suggestion that if this was refused they would turn their back on Croydon. To be honest even if permission had of been granted it would have probably been unlikely that with the current economic situation that this development would have started in earnest. What really needs to happen now is for this new ECR masterplan to come about which will hopefully allow Ruskin Square to get going, whilst also allowing East Croydon station to expand (pos new platforms etc.) so that it can futureproofed to be able to cope with all these new developments, it is the UK's busiest station outside London already! Hopefully once it is resolved it will silence some of the NIMBY's that the transport infrastructure 'won't be able to cope' and allow for some of these schemes to progress forwards!

It's probably the height that scared people, I would like to see what real impact these buildings had on shadows in the area, that's probably one of the main killers of this scheme.

The plans for this site have resurfaced, and now comprise just one tower, although it will be 50 stories/160-180m tall! A pity they scrapped the other 3 towers, but if this actually does get build (a case of I'll believe it when I see it), it will still transform this part of Croydon.

Does it matter - nothing will ever be built here anyway.

Business leader throws his weight behind Menta tower
Croydon Today
1 July 2011

SUPPORT: Peter Pledger is backing the Menta scheme

Quote:
A LEADING London business chief has lent his support to the 54-storey skyscraper development in East Croydon.

Peter Pledger, chief executive of the South London Business group, has said the Menta scheme – which includes the tower, regeneration of East Croydon Station, and a new footbridge – would be beneficial to the borough.

His support comes as a new campaign group, Revitalising East Croydon Communities (RECC), was formed to oppose the tower.

Mr Pledger said: "Menta's proposals for Cherry Orchard Road will kick-start the regeneration of the area around East Croydon Station, bringing benefits both for people who live in Addiscombe and the thousands of people who use the station every day.

"It will also boost business in Croydon as a whole."

Mr Pledger will host a reception this week for members of South London Business, where Menta's Craig Marks will spell out the benefits to business of the scheme.

Mr Pledger claims the 54-storey block of flats, opposed by some residents as overpowering and too large, would signal confidence in the future of the borough.

Addiscombe councillors have publicly opposed the scheme, claiming the skyscraper is out of place in the area and alleging that Menta has not provided a proper amount of social housing.

The scheme will be considered by Croydon's Strategic Planning Committee next month.

South London Business is an organisation which aims to support and promote business in the region.

The proposed centerpiece tower will be called the "Morello Tower"... roughly 172m.

Croydon Council decide on July 21st.

Its the right thread!

I posted a few posts above that Croydon Council would decide on this scheme today.

This thread title can be changed from "cancelled" to "approved".... and the main tower is ~171m

Just came back from the planning committee meeting and this has been approved. Thanks to all the local people willing to fight for regeneration in Croydon despite all the nimby opposition led by councillor Fitzsimons. A positive day for Croydon and a victory for local residents.

Was a heated meeting and the galleries were packed with an overflow room being used. Much support on both sides of the issue but rationality won the day.

There was great fly through cgi video shown which I hope will be put online.

Just read the posts about the Council's decision, very pleased and excited after so long. I was at Croydon Question time on Tuesday and on the panel were Tim Pollard, in charge of regeneration/development and Mike Phisher leader of the Council. I was desperate to ask about the potential cluster and Cherry Orchard Road but I bottled it lol
