It got up to 67º here, I believe. It felt so nice yesterday.

Too bad it's going to rain and snow on Friday

There'll be plenty more where that came from. Patience.

I've seen them in zoos before. But not in real life.

Never seen a moose, either.

Hey everyone, behold the BuiltBuffalo forums!
www.builtbuffalo.com/forums/

That place i've been talking about where people can discuss all things urban/development/ect. having to to with Buffalo and the surrounding area. Even da Cheektowaga der.

Feel free to stop by and pay a visit.

Edit: Oops, I meant to post this in the Buffalo non-development thread. Oh well, i'll leave it here for anyone actually interested in Buffalo

My post in the "Buffalo Non-Development Thread" got me thinking of recent teams and suggestions they had for names. Some were just ideas, some were finalists, some were supposed to be the names. Here's what I remember and what I came up with:

Phoenix Coyotes: Phoenix Scorpions
Arizona Diamondbacks: Arizona Coyotes, Arizona Phoenix, Arizona Rattlers
Tampa Bay Devil Rays: Tampa Bay Tarpons, Tampa Bay Sting Rays (their original choice, but a Hawaiian Winter League team owned the "Sting Rays" name)
Washington Nationals: Washington Senators, Washingotn Grays
Minnesota Wild: Minnesota Freeze, Minnesota Blue Ox, Minnesota Voyagers, Minnesota White Bears, Minnesota Northern Lights
Nashville Predators: Nashville Fury, Nashville Ice Fury (that would've been the worst name in the four pro leagues if they used that
Charlotte Bobcats: Charlotte Flight, Charlotte Dragons
Columbus Blue Jackets: Columbus Chill, Columbus Justice, Columbus Buckeyes, Columbus Mad Cows (half-serious)
Colorado Avalanche: Denver Cougars, Denver Black Bears [note: I first heard about the "Avalanche" moniker in the Buffalo News while staying in Canada, and in the announcement, the official name would be the "Colorado Rocky Mountain Avalanche". I have never seen or heard "Rocky Mountain Avalanche" used since that first announcement.]
San Jose Sharks: San Jose Blades, San Jose Waves, San Jose Breakers, San Jose Icebreakers, San Jose Golden Skaters, San Jose Breeze, San Jose Fog
Vancouver (Memphis) Grizzlies: Vancouver Mounties
Houston Texans: Houston Apollos (frontrunner for team's name until last few weeks before announcement), Houston Stallions, Houston Bobcats, Houston Wildcatters
Jacksonville Jaguars: Jacksonville Sharks, Jacksonville Sting Rays, Jacksonville Panthers (interesting, because Carolina would beat Jacksonville to the "Panthers" name), Jacksonville Admirals (most popular as voted by fans, but the front office over-ruled it)
Toronto Raptors: Toronto Hogs, Toronto Beavers, Toronto Bobcats, Toronto Terriers, Toronto Dragons, Toronto Grizzlies, Toronto Scorpions, Toronto T-Rex, Toronto Tarantulas
Tennessee Titans: Tennessee Presidents, Tennessee Copperheads, Tennessee Generals
Baltimore Ravens: Baltimore Americans, Baltimore Mauraders

The Columbus Buckeyes might make some confused

The rest sound cool though.

I added the Baltimore Ravens, which I overlooked.

There are a few names that the Titans and Ravens also considered, but I can't remember them.

How about some not-so-recent teams? I'm sure several of them had some interesting alternatives.

I'm having trouble remembering what some of the other potential names for the Sabres were...

My problem with team names now, in general (there are some notable exceptions) is that there seems to be a lack of creativity. It seems to be that older teams' names tended to reflect the city in which they were from (Steelers, Patriots, and 49ers for instance), or had a distinct meaning and logic behind them (Sabres for instance); whereas now it seems we just name them after animals, in particular it seems cats (Panthers, Jaguars, Bobcats, Predators (logo), etc.). Of course that doesn't include the plethora of team names which could be considered derogatory towards the Native Americans, which is an entirely different argument.

It was the chosen alternative by the fans in a naming contest because they felt that a sabre represented what they thought a hockey team should be - quick, cunning, and deadly; more or less. Their created AHL affiliate was also the Cincinnati Swords (which seems more like an unoriginal play on the original) which had a very brief but very sucessful and well-supported existance.

I can do older teams, I'll do that later.

Why do such little places in New York like Pavilion and Rushford have bird's eye views on maps.live.com, but there are no bird's eye views for Wilmington?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm still waiting for bird's eye views of Baghdad. I mean, how hard can it be to put up a helicopter and fly over the Iraqi capital?
