the design is awesome, but then again it seems from the pictures that you only notice this "water effect" of the curved balconies when you stand right next to the building and look straight up, right?
from far away it still looks very boxy

in such a detailed highrise, a gap like that sure sticks out.
surely Gang and assoc. realized that, and had to go forth anyways because the mech floor Cannot Have Balconies. the Gap will be a part of architectural class discussions for years.

I simply love this building.

By the looks of some of the last few comments it seems as though I am in the minority with this opinion, but I happen to love how the mechanical floor is left unadorned with terraces. Yes, I do live in Chicago, but no, I am not apologizing for the design because of this fact. I have plenty of negative criticisms to throw at many Chicago buildings (others who are aware of my general sentiments know this to be true).

I happen to be a strong believer in functional expression and honesty, and this belief also influences my aesthetic sensibilities to a strong degree. Plopping faux balconies onto a mechanical floor where no one lives is a move that is motivated by no rhyme or reason; simply done to provide some cheap form of visual continuity. Leaving the mechanical floor "exposed" provides a glimpse into the design program, into the rationalization of the aesthetic. It declares that this is not a building of form; rather, a synergy of form and function with neither taking precedence. I used this analogy in another statement about this very issue, but I liken it to flipping over a fine timepiece and being able to see the movement. Beauty is more than skin deep.

OK, I am getting off of the high horse now, sorry to bother you all with that. But I happen to like this building a lot, and I would like it a lot less with the mechanical floor obscured by a conciliatory move to appease opinions of the lowest common denominator.

Pictures tomorrow, hopefully...

A very good source (a construction worker on the project, I believe) posted on the Aqua thread at SSP and said that they were going to pour half of 75 a couple days ago, but they were delayed by the sub-zero (degrees-F) temperatures we are experiencing here. So that leaves approximately 8 or 9 floors left of the units, plus whatever they are planning for above them (possibly a floor of mechanical, but I honestly don't know--someone else more knowledgeable will have to chime in).

Edit: Whoops, just noticed you were from Chicago, so obviously you know how cold it is here. Didn't mean to sound patronizing.
