NM made a mistake.. had they extended BYPL-Whitfield as part of Phase 1, at least that could have given them big revenue to meet their operational cost.

It is not too late for NM. By the time the Underground Section of E-W corridor finishes, if they could extend BYPL to Whitefield, NM will truly materialize for what it is built.

BANGALORE: Namma Bengaluru shows the way and has sent a strong message today about environmental protection by hanging a one-km-long banner at the Cubbon Park. In an attempt to spread awareness on environmental issues and the perils of destroying nature, a unique campaign, the World Environment Campaign was launched in the city as a high profile buildup to the World Environment Day that will be celebrated on June 5 all over the world.
As part of the launch, City Police Commissioner, B G Jyoti Prakash Mirji signed on this huge and environment friendly cloth banner that has been hung in Cubbon Park.
This one-km-long banner will try to create environmental awareness, 45 days ahead of the World Environment Day. Similar banners will be hung over different parts of the country. Signatures of environment experts and artists from various fields will be displayed on this banner. “Environment and health go together. Air pollution, usage of plastic, water pollution and global warming have done enough damage to human lives. Protecting the environment should be the responsibility of all of us. Hence, we have planned this campaign. We request the public to join hands with us. Let us make this campaign a grand success. With this, we should all become environment lovers,” said Srikanth Rao, Director of Bayer’s Coffee.
The banners will contain all environment related information, pictures, slogans, pledges, and signatures of achievers. They will in fact take information to the public. The banners, creating awareness about environment, will be displayed in front of schools, colleges, private and public offices.
In the first week of June, all these banners will be joined together and form a huge 100-km-long banner on Nice Road. “This is the best way to create awareness about environment and draw global attention towards the campaign. We are trying to reach the public across the country at such times and also to convey the reasons and solutions for environmental pollution,” said JC Shankar Patil, Campaign President.
This huge campaign has chalked out various plans for the first week of June; planting 10 lakh plants across the country, take pledge on environmental awareness, try to create awareness among school children about environment issues like air pollution, usage of plastic, and water pollution.
After this campaign, this huge banner cloth will be converted into beds, bed sheets and hand bags for and distributed free of cost to old age homes, Hostels, Hospitals and the other needy people.

There was photo of malleswaram viaduct across the tracks on this thread some 3 weeks ago right? You are talking about the longest viaduct in phase 1 right? If not here, I guess I saw it in the BMRCL newsletter.

Also there was news of viaduct manufacturing unit at kanakapura road being shut due to court orders.

That was the viaduct along Chord Road, Reach 2. Even I got confused.

Who was casting at K'pura?
The K'pura road section is being cast at Huskur, as I posted a photo of the area.

They had said 45 days to dismantle, assemble and relaunch the same from the far end of the station towards Vidhana Soudha.
Now its just past 45 days.. But then, the conversion factor (1.2x, 1.5x or 2x or more ? ) is not known. Hope they reveal in May newsletter..

If the statue is removed, then they might have continued significantly in these 45 days?
earlier completion of this stretch, it will reduce the loss on MG road-BYPL operations as well...

I dont think so.. the statue is at the Vidhana soudha station site... I don't think it would affect the transfer of the TBMs across (Central college) and drill till the station from Central College

TBMs weigh some 350 tons. How would they transport them without dismantling ? Tracks through station areas (being built by cut & cover) will not have been built.

I would've expected that engineering technology would've reached such an extent that we could just move them from one end to another.

After saying there is no need for toilets, BMRCL has started building toilets at the MG Road station. They have plans for coffee shops too.

The MG Road metro station will soon have two restrooms - one near Anil Kumble Cirlce, and the other next to the station at the start of boulevard.Restrooms will be for three categories - men, women and disabled.

BMRC had initially said that the stations do not need restrooms as the time of journey is very short. "The decision to start restrooms was taken after continued demand of citizens," says Ravi Prakash, Manager PRO at BMRC. One restroom each is planned for Ulsoor and Swami Vivekananda Road stations, but tenders for these have not been finalised.

MG Road and Bayappanahalli stations will have coffee shops as well. BMRC (Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation) floated tenders for coffee shops on April 4th. Four shops - two each on MG Road (one on Anil Kumble Circle end, other on Brigade Road end) and Bayappanahalli (one of OMR side, another on NGEF side) - will come up.

Both restrooms and coffee shops will be open to general public in addition to Metro commuters. These structures will be outside, completely separated from the main Metro station.

Prakash says that the tenders for coffee shops will be awarded in 1-2 months. He says that BMRC is expecting major brands like Cafe Coffee Day to bid for the license to start coffee shops. Coffee shop will be a kiosk that serves coffee/tea, beverages and ready-to-eat bakery and confectionery of reputed brands. Rest of the area will be reserved for seating.

As per the bid document in BMRC website, only those who own/operate at least 25 coffee shops of a particular brand are eligible to apply. The bidder should have operated these shops for at least three financial years with average turnover of Rs 15 cr per year.

Tenders for coffee shops are initially for two years, and can be extended another two terms of two years each (another four years total). Only for Bayappanahalli station's OMR side coffee shop, contract will not be renewed after two years.

In addition to a fixed one-time fee, licensees have to pay a Minimum Monthly Guarantee (MMG) amount to BMRC. The bidder who quotes the highest MMG will get the license.

BMRC can inspect the shops and give notice for any repairs if needed; the shops should also submit to BMRC reports on safety and hygiene of the shop twice a year. "Though BMRC will have overall control, operations will be completely outsourced. Same is the case for toilets - contractors will be free to decide the usage charges," says Prakash.

"Since the contract for restrooms is in PPP (Public Private Partnership) model, there is no question of us fixing rates. When the contractor runs the service, they have to recover revenue from it," says BMRC's Chief PRO B L Y Chavan.

The restroom contracts are for eight years, for contractors to design, build, own, operate and transfer those. Restrooms are supposed to have high-end facilities and will sport advertisements. Only bidders with average annual turnover of Rs 20 cr for the last three years are being considered.

Feeder services break even, almost

When Metro started operating in October, Metro Feeder (MF) buses were not much in demand and the number of trips had to be cut down. BMTC's Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO) B G Sampangi Rame Gowda says that routes had to be rationalised in November, but not after. Feeders had started with 1250 trips initially; now there are only 890 trips. "There are 60 feeder buses and we spend about Rs 6000-7000 for each bus daily. The total daily collection is Rs 3 - 3.5 lakhs, which almost covers the expenditure," says Gowda.

There are four feeder routes (MF-1, 2, 3 and 10) from MG Road, one from Trinity Circle (MF-4), two from Indira Nagar (MF-5), three from Swami Vivekananda road (MF-6, 11 and 11A), and two from Bayappanahalli station (MF-7 and 9).
