Let's drive on A2 from Slovenian/Croatian border at Obrežje/Bregana to Ljubljana. For me, the most beautiful motorway in Slovenia.
(about 8 MB of pictures altogether)

Let's say you come from far east and you drove hundreds of km on flat Panonian plain. Coming from Croatian motorway A3, you'll enter Slovenia at border crossing Obrežje/Bregana (I took photo from side)

Now lets continue to west (east goes to Zagreb).

First there is a petrol station and Obrežje junction. Mokrice castle on left side.

Then first hills begin.

Between hills and Sava river is very narrow.

Approaching Brežice junction.

Čatež ob Savi and gallery right after junction.

Not very nice, but ok (105 m long).

On the top of the (not very high) hill there is a petrol station and resting place.

Again down, over Krka river bridge to plains.

Boring driving, virtually no traffic.

Water on the road? No, just too much heat.

If we look back, we came from that hills, left side of them.

From the motorway you can see Krško nuclear plant.

Krško junction.

Taking right lane ...

ABC means in free translation "Automatic cash less tolling".

"Freie fahrt" (for 1,80 €).

Entering Krakovski forest.

It has big population of oak trees and it is quite swampy. Motorway has here lots of small bridges and culverts.

Resting place Zaloke.

Raka junction, low traffic.

Back into the forest, but hills are approaching.

Dobruška vas junction.

Plains are closing, hills announce end to boring driving.

At Bela Cerkev village ("White church")

Hey, what the heck ...

It's the end ...

No worry, construction of new motorway is in progress (due to finish by the summer of 2008)

New viaduct.

Now we drive on H1, almost 50 years old.

Otočec junction, traffic is increasing.

Here petrol station, hotel, casino, castle and famous "Šoferska" restaurant.

Approaching again to motorway construction site.

That pavement is really really bad

Okey!

Mačkovec viaduct (353 m).

Going uphill, bypassing Novo mesto, largest town in Dolenjska region.

First covered cutting, road crosses motorway, also second Novo mesto junction (only two km from first one)

Yes, some roadworks. (this section of motorway was opened one year ago, but they left final layer of asphalt to be installed for this year because of difficult geology, which caused original asphalt to displace for 3 cm in one year)

Longest covered cutting in Slovenia (I'm not sure, if gallery is right term), old road went on the top of it (can be seen on right side) - 290 m long

Inside ...

Other side.

Going down, village in front is Karteljevo (Karteljevo ascent caused much trouble on old road before motorway was built)

Motorway here has grade separated lanes.

Looking back ...

Nice view.

Oh no, not again!

And even this, "Dangerous section". This highway has been dubbed "Road of death" already decades ago. Last big accident occurred two years ago, when eight people died in a crash.

OK, not far away ...

On left hill, where forest is cut, new motorway will go. Construction should start in autumn.

I think construction should start very soon.

Scenic road.

Top of Poljanski ascent. Where are all those flat plains already?

Ah, here are some.

Aproaching Trebnje ...

... junction

(next photos were taken the next day, so don't be surprised of weather change)
Also with petrol station and motel. New motorway will go on left hill, up to 70 m above valley.

Yes, very "useful" information
Left of this village on the hill a new 400 m long tunnel will be built.

Ah, yes, those 14 km of H1 are ending.

Motorway to the end of the journey.

Covered cutting for many animals to go over motorway.

Climbing Medvedjek ascent. It looked like this 30 years ago ...

Now it is more modern, first covered cutting (165 m) ...

... and second (98 m).

Bič junction.

In reality there is only 30 km to Ljubljana.

Time to pay 1,70 € ...

Hm, I think I need to put some money on my prepayment account

Continuing to Ljubljana (right is railway line).

Ivančna Gorica junction, usually with lots of traffic.

More and more hills.

This petrol station and resting place is only one sided.

Višnja Gora junction

On the other side of that wall there is a cemetery. When they were building this motorway 20 years ago, some coffins fell onto construction place

Climbing on last and longest ascent.

Ljubljana is close ...

Hey wait, where ...

... is other lane?

Ah, there is (far away).

In 1989 old road was converted to motorway for one direction without any reconstruction. So did old road look before 1989:

Ad so it looks today:

narrow, curvy, with 100 km/h speed restriction

old objects remained (they are 50 years old)

probably most dangerous curve there

and steep descent. Complete reconstruction is planned after 2010. New route will probably follow new half of motorway, shown previously.

Continuing now to Ljubljana, here's first Grosuplje junction.

Hm, those clouds are getting thicker.

Second Grosuplje junction.

And right after that, third junction (it leads traffic in one direction only - to and from Škofljica).

Ljubljana now only 6 km away.

First real tunnel on our journey (400 m long).

Right after the tunnel there is 610 m long viaduct Reber, here seen with weather station installed - on the end there is a radar box.

Deepest cutting on A2, up to 60 m deep (tunnel was planned here, but rocky material was very good and they decided to use it for construction).

Aproaching Malence intersection with A1. Wow, clouds are preparing for something

Right to Graz, Maribor and easteren Ljubljana, left to Trieste, Venezia, Koper, Villach and south and west Ljubljana, also another tunnel (355 m).

Intersection Malence is placed on very small space ...

... and includes also Ljubljana-south junction.

Here A1 connects from Maribor/Graz direction.

And so A1 and A2 continue together on south Ljubljana bypass ... (to see more A2 towards Austrian border, look at message #180)

And then storm began ...

Super!

By the way, I love how some Slovenian town names are very odd, like Bič (pronounced Bitch, means Whip ) or Ptuj (pronounced Ptooie, reminds anyone of spitting?)..

Heh, I also see that the A2 needs some serious renovating.. And the H1.. horrendous! Looks like it's in Moldova, not in the developed world, heh..

great pics!!

motorway looks great! i dodn't know that it won't folloe H1 all the way! i just cannot get used to often exits (here in Croatia they are more rare).
i'll be good and won't comment H1 i just can say that it's better to watch then to drive on it
and the south lane around that hill - it looks quite unsafe. i know it follows old road and curves are quite strong. i didn't know that there is no emergency lane yet! they should put concrete barriers to both sides all the way!
the best thing - a lot of service areas! well done!

Offtopic: Hey Verso, when the new Struma motorway will pass through Dupnica, it will be similar to Jesenica as in Dupnica there are also high mountains very close and it allready looks similar to Jesenice.

Well, Chris, I think that's understandable . We South-Eastern EU citizens have so few motorways and it's easy to get over-excited when we build a new one! Our respective governments are also "contributing" to our excitement by moving at snail's pace and making a normal thing like building a motorway over here look similar to constructing the 7 Great Wonders.

Here in Romania we will also get a similar brand-new motorway through the mountains, with plenty of tunnels and bridges. It will cross the beautiful Prahova Valley, underneath the steep Bucegi Mountains, and is badly needed for touristic purposes, but judging from the incompetence at the higher levels, it won't be finished anytime soon unfortunately...

Anyway, back on topic: are there any plans for a motorway or fast road from Postojna towards Rijeka? Because I was very surprised to travel on a normal 2-lane road in the rich Slovenia and then switch to a newly-built shiny motorway after the border at Rupa, in poorer Croatia.

It´s ******* sad that the corrupted whoresons do nothing, why does EU not control those whroesons that they finally really start building motorways and new railways not only on one or two places but in our whole countries so that finally there is work. I remember Hungary building very good motorways 1997 - 1998, they worked like hell there, building and building the motorway and in Bulgaria just now something happens, in 1998 there were probably 300 km motorway and that was all, ******* imbeciles and the railways still suck big time. For what do we have the streettaxes? I really can´t understand for what we have strettaxes for such roads, now they started to improve in bulgaria but it´s far from enough, ******* whoresons. they also work way too slow, i can´t think of something that really could make them finally speed up the construction. and i don´t know at all why some idiots who want protect environment protest because of building motorway, they should protest for other things but not a motorway, the cars on a motorway don´t need as much benzin as on landroads where they have to stop for trafficlights etc.

Croatia only had a couple of kilometres to Slovenia, the situation is a bit different here, we don't even know where to start the motorway yet, there are several variants being considered at the moment. Anyway, an urbanist study is in the works.

Besides, there's not that much traffic there outside of the summer months, there are much more critical roads around Slovenia.

Traffic amounts are not the only reason to build a Avtocesta. (right word?) You can pick traffic safety, economic development and freight traffic too. Rijeka might be an important harbor Slovenia (i don't know for sure)?

I guess Rijeka, located in Croatia, wouldn't be such an important port for Slovenia, and it's also outside EU borders at the moment. Koper is the main port as far as I know (probably also Trieste, just across the border in Italy). Still, an Avtocesta would be good for developing the southern parts and connecting with the (Croatian) Adriatic coast. Not to mention the fact that Croatia is way more developed then EU members Romania and Bulgaria, so it will probably join sooner than anyone thinks.

Right, but the problem is we have a lot of roads where there is a lot of traffic year-round and are only two-laned and those just have the priority at the moment. I do agree however that it should become a motorway soon.

Oh, and Slovenia has its own port, Koper.

Okay, i know that, but i didn't know if that port has any importance. Rijeka might have been a transit port for Slovenia and further away. Like Rotterdam or Antwerp is for Germany.
