However, after fall of these liberal politicians, Yugoslav authorities decided to upgrade the B&U expw into the real motorway, financed by foreign western loans. Europe wanted that because at this time this road was the only connector between European Economic Community and Greece (and of course Turkey too, however via Bulgaria). And Yugoslavia wanted that motorway too because for the communist hardliners, which succeeded thrown liberal leaders mentioned before, this project became a mean of social cohesion (Brotherhood and Unity again, this time in shape of a motorway).

En passant: the last section of B&U expw was in fact finished as real motorway: Belgrade Thruway from Surčin to Vrčin(?), together with the Gazelle bridge (the photos of building that bridge are recently posted at the Serbian thread). And because of that Europe didn't want to finance the Belgrade Beltway and Yugoslav authorities never build it (Serbia started to build it as a half-motorway).

Sorry for entering off-topic. (I am a bit more informed because my mother as an engineer took part in the building of Zagreb-Karlovac motorway.)

First I want to say that it is so interesting what you write, because it is hard to find any information on-line about this topic and especially so systematised. Very good job, it would be interesting maybe to open the topic about B&U motorway if not here than I welcome you to do so in Serbian part of forum, I am positive that lot of people would be interested in topic. It would be shame that the knowledge you poses is not presented on one place and to go in vane.
Great job

As of Macedonia I am not sure that the road Tetovo - Gostivar was first in Macedonia I think they have built it since independence in 1992.

What about construction works in A2 Peracica-Podtabor. Did all lines in both directions open?
In future you will have 4 motorways 2x2 to Croatia. A2 exist, A4 may be built before 2015. What about plans for motorway between Postojna and Croatian A7 and between Koper and Croatian A9? When this motorways should be constructed?

A4 possibly could be finished till 2015, there's only about 15 km missing!

But there are some problems with spatial plans and possible corridor of the motorway in Postojna/Divača/Ilirska Bistrica region, because Croatia wants corridor to Divača and Trieste (to connect Rijeka to Italy), while Slovenia has intention to connect the motorway to Postojna and Ljubljana. We'll see what will come up

The third unrealised connection is from Koper to Dragonja/Kaštel border crossing. Slovenia is planning an expressway H5, but that's not priority in their plans. They don't plan to build it in next 5 years

I wanted to mention that on Slovenian A1 the peak that can be seen, Storciz or how it is called, is quite impressive, it does start right from nothing and goes pretty steep up to 2100 m.

It is fully opened now with no obstacles (except for the ridiculous speed limit of 100 km/h in 300 m long tunnel on straight motorway with hard shoulders).

Croatia probably wants both of them, but I'd say the one to Postojna/Ljubljana is more important to you, no?

Storžič can be seen from the A2.

It would be more effective, if there were a physical barrier.

But however useless: I don't think there is a continuous flow of cyclists that would made problematic a normal intersection.

I think at some point in future both Divača and Postojna connections will be built (link straight towards H4 is not very likely), not so near future but at least the planning for this motorway* is already in progress.

*one of the DARS maps has the road with both options drawn as expressway ...

They are dashed, which means they probably won't build both of them (except perhaps in distant future).

the expressway to Croatia will be H6, H5 will end in Lucija near Portoroz. H6 -> Koper - (Smarje) - Dragonja
