They probably get most heavily damaged in landslides, like here:

...but you can also expect this:

In normal time, this is small river, few meters wide and no deeper than half meter.

because Slovenia is in the Alps and we all, who are not in Alps, just can imagine the floods and water streams of those floods. only worst and more destructive are floods in Ands.

Believe it or not, but floods are usually just as destructive here in Romania and they happen all the time. The fact that Romanian authorities are dumb and incompetent probably helps a lot in making things worse, though.

Many here have the impression that floods happen because the Gov't returns many forests to private property and they are being cut and abused in order to make money. While that might be partially true, this also happens now in the most forested Central European country - there is something larger at work here.

I think global warming is the culprit. Also last spring I saw the devastation of the 2004 storm in the Tatras, where the 200 year old forests at the base of the mountains were uprooted. Luckily the upper parts of the forest survived.

Last summer I went up the Aiguille du Midi near Chamonix - 3800 m. There were at least 15C up there, I was only wearing a t-shirt. When I went hiking in the summer with my parents in the Bucegi mountains (~2000 m) in Romania during my childhood, I used to wear a thick winter jacket and gloves. Things are not looking normal anymore.

Something must be done at the Global level - and fast!

This post might be a bit off topic but it's very important to realize that something just isn't right.

Yeah, we had that too. This year, summer ceased to be my favorite season. I could barely sleep properly during the night (and windows were wide open).

At one point, we were jealous of the people living in Cairo, because they had 34C and we were having 41C ! Maybe next summer we should go to Sahara to cool down !

Hey, was anyone saving the pictures in this thread? I see some of them are already missing (stupid Imageshack), and my hard drive was burnt a while ago, and I lost the photos. Anyone?

Interesting news: there have been rumours about building the second tube of the Karavanke Tunnel! I wonder what Austrians would say to this, I don't think they are interested.

Yeah, a preliminary study was concluded just a couple of days/weeks ago, but the result of it isn't public yet. But it's only a study, it doesn't mean it will ever get built..

I'd support it, as we've had our share of tunnel disasters in Austria:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tauern_Road_Tunnel
12 killed, 50 injured
Thinking of Mt.Blanc, it could have been even worse.

Indeed double-tube tunnels are much safer. Check this website (it's in German, and quite old (from the end of 2006)), where it says the second tube will be built when the AADT exceeds 20,000 (now it's just 6,000, but god knows what happens after the borders fall); if not, they will only build an emergency shaft (Fluchtstollen), which would cost 100 million €. The second tube OTOH wouldn't be much more expensive (300 m €), so at the latest by 2019 it will have been decided, whether it's not better just to build a second tube.

6.000 doesn't need a second tube. It's the holiday seasons which require a second tube.

We don't even have a motorway in the Netherlands with such a low traffic intensity.

It's not a matter of capacity, it's a matter of safety.
