that's also why I wrote Rozna Dolina, because it bypasses Nova Gorica and goes directly to Gorizia/Gorica.
SS56 connected Udine and Aidussina (now Ajdovscina) before WWII.

I've been on Triglav. As for that road, once I drove on all Slovenian old roads (parallel to motorways and expressways). Now I realize that somehow I forgot Postojna - Nova Gorica. I just drive on the H4 now, once we drove here, and once we came from Gorizia before 1996 and there were signs for a motorway, so we followed them, but then the motorway ended in 1 km. So we drove here.

I don't understand that. motorway before 1996 was only 700m at the Vrtojba border crossing, then after 1996 was from Sempeter-Selo, section you should have driven, Vrtojba-Sempeter, was opened only in 1998.

I think Vrtojba-Šempeter was opened in the first half of 1990s (without the border crossing, which was opened in 1980). It's also possible that we drove like this and the motorway temporarily ended directly in the 2-lane road, but then it would be faster to drive like this (but it depends on signs). I just know the motorway ended about 1 km after we joined it.

Vrtojba-Sempeter was really opened in 1998.
If we stick with 'after 1 km motorway ended' only two things are possible - you either drove this (if before 1996)or this (if after 1996)

Could that be an error? It says they started building it in 1989. They needed 9 years for that simple 1.5-km motorway? So you came from Italy, the motorway ended 700 m after the border crossing and then there was again a motorway between Šempeter and Selo? Also:

If I remember right, the H4 ended at Šempeter exit before the (now) bridge to Bazara toll station?

I found this map in a book from 1995 (I photographed it from too close):

I think we drove this way.

Maybe like this?

I saw old sign in Šempeter by traffic light taking you to the border checkpoint if you want to go to Ljubljana.

i remember traveling to Italy in the times when A1 used to end in Razdrto. traveling on state road from Razdrto to Fernetiči always lasted ages. but i cannot remember which road we've been using rather - via Štorje or via Divača (i guess the first one).
then after the border there was not motorway connector built yet, but we had to go through Villa Opicina (watching funny tram ) adn entered Trieste bypass somewhere around Prosecco.
