My dad has 1978 Soviet Union road atlas.
My oldest is Der Neue Grosse Shell Atlas '86.

And speaking of navigation. Almost every navigation uses female voice. And i never let any woman tell me how to do drive

Yes, i know, i'm a male chauvinistic pig

Hi, pmaciej7. So I guess you've found answers to those questions.

No, pa začnimo.

Ljubljana ring road -> counterclockwise direction
47 pictures, 3 MB
This ringroad was built in parts between years 1981 and 1999. It is 28 km long (clockwise) or 29,5 km (counterclockwise). It is very busy and has quite large number of exits. Expansions of some parts are planned, but not in very near future.
shiny crashbarriers: included

Let's start at A1-H3 intersection Zadobrova on eastern part of ring road. Straight goes to Maribor and further to Graz, Vienna, Budapest. We turn right and go over A1 to west.

Here H3 begins.

H3 is an expressway and has many exits.

White signs are for city districts.

All exits around Ljubljana are now numbered.

Here goes old road to Maribor.

Above expressway is the biggest roundabout in Slovenia. In few years it will also get exit to the left side with new road to new sport complex, that will be built.

This section is one of the most congested in morning rushhour.

WTC building on the left.

Bežigrad exit.

Some autumn greenery.

Another congested exit is Ljubljana-north, where main road to Austria and Germany goes.

This is the last exit on H3.

Now approaching future intersection A2-H3, Koseze, to be opened in June 2008.

It is completed, only tunnel further north is not finished yet.

Now this is A2, looking south, this part to next intersection is the most congested motorway in Slovenia. In few years it is planned to be expanded to 3+3.

Electronic portals are not operating yet, they will start with A2 gap closing next year.

Soon there is another intersection A1-A2, Kozarje, the oldest one in Slovenia.

Right it goes to Koper, Trieste, Venice. We turn left.

Now there begins common section of A1 and A2. We drive to east.

Ljubljana-west exit.

Nice view of Ljubljana, if you sit high enough (didn't have such luck).

Small part, that was renovated in July this year.

Rest area Barje.

Whoow. It is shiny!

The fastest approach to Ljubljana-center.

This joint part of A1 and A2 is built on marshland with very difficult geology, and motorway needs constant repairs. Motorway is not even 20 years old.

One of exits to growing number of shopping centers.

Approaching fourth intersection.

It is built in narrow valley and it's not quite representative of traffic safety.

We turn left now, if you go straight, you continue on A2 towards Zagreb, Belgrade, Athens.

Intersection Malence.

Overview of intersection.

Approaching the only tunnel on ring road.

Inside Golovec tunnel.

Now we are on A1, going towards north.

Alps in the background.

Cut-and-cover.

Lowering back to plains.

Bizovik exit.

Approaching bridge over Ljubljanica river.

This short bridge is called "The harp".

Ljubljana-east exit.

If you can notice on this picture, Ljubljana city has some special designations for directions on their signs. They may be modern, but to me are not very evident.

Going under main railway line and aproaching to Zadobrova A1-H3 intersection.

And there this reportage ends.

Thank you!

Very nice, thanks for this extensive report, Keber!

Sometimes i wonder if they should renumber Slovenia's roads;

A1 Ljubljana - Maribor - Sentilj
A2 Ljubljana - Novo Mesto - Jesenice
A3 Ljubljana - Postojna - Koper - Portoroz
A4 Ljubljana - Kranj - Jesenice
A5 Ljubljana - Trzin
A6 Maribor - Krapina
A7 Maribor - Murska Soboto - Lendava
A8 Radzdrto - Nova Gorica
A9 Divaca - Sezana
A10 Ring Ljubljana
A11 Postojna - Jelsane
A12 Dekani - Trieste
A13 Maribor throughway

But then again, maybe some expressways are having too low standards to recieve an A-number. Or Slovenia is too small for so many numbers (some proposals are only a few km long)

Keber, thanks for the other direction, it looks great!

Chris: Ljubljana - Trzin doesn't deserve an A number, Maribor throughway neither. In 2009 opens a real Maribor motorway bypass (east of the city). As for having just 2 numbers for the 4 main directions running from Ljubljana: we always had these two expressions Slovenika (now A1) and Ilirika (now A2), so we've always considered them uninterrupted by Ljubljana, although it's obvious that LJ has gained in importance since Slovenia's independence. The A1 follows rather national interests though, considering that it runs from Koper (Adriatic Sea) to Austria, although internationally the V. Corridor is more important (Italy - Hungary). And A10 for the ring like Amsterdam?

but Chris has my point of view, i have allready wrote it somewhere: LJ ring should get its own number, for instance A0 as Budapest (although i don't like zero, maybe better A10), and 4 main motorways that go like rays from LJ should get A1-A4: A1 LJ-MB-Sentilj, A2 LJ-NM-Obrezje, A3 LJ-PO-KP, A4 LJ-KR-Karavanke tunnel, and other motorways get other numbers, for instance: A5 Razdrto-Sezana-Fernetici, A6 MB-Ptuj-Gruskovje, A7 MB-MS-Lendava...

btw, do you have exit numbers only for LJ ring, or all round SLO exits got tables with numbers? and this exit 33 (for instance), where is it counted from, it's large number!

I didn't know about that one!

Verso, it appears you haven't shown us ALL of Slovenia's motorways just yet...

They are all over SLO, and exit #33 follows the A1 (the southern LJ bypass is officially just A1, without being A2). And no thanks for another renumbering after just a few years.

I'll wait for some bigger length. I doubt it's even designated as motorway now.

Yeah, you're always surprised. Seems our policy is: motorway into every village.

Seems to be doing wonders for the local economy where it does appear, though.. Anyways, those 600 metres aren't built yet, because of a weak old lady who refuses to move out of the way for the motorway. You might remember that article, Verso, I know we posted it once, it actually hasn't been settled yet as far as I know, that granny still won't leave her beloved home on the border..

^ Right, now I remember! Despite being a highway freak and all, someone was already asking this a couple of weeks ago, and I have to admit I didn't have a clue whether it was already built or not, despite all the feverish searching for any kind of evidence. DARS website sucks!

Dars will never admit its incompetence to evict an old granny that's barely moving from some old house right by a very busy road..
