Hot damn, if even radi is impressed, that's gotta mean something.

well, Črni Kal is one of the most beatiful viaducts in Europe (and worldwide, I'd say) and there are fantastic spots for taking photos of it. i especially like those Y pillars, they are wonderfull and really pitty that all of them are not in that shape

The Šentvid Tunnel

In Ljubljana there's another 6-lane (2×3) tunnel under construction, which will be part of the A2 motorway and will connect the Ljubljana ringroad with the motorway for Villach. Unfortunately it will only be opened in half a year, when Slovenia stops presiding EU.

Its length is 1.2 km and estimated price 120.5 million €. On the northern side on- and off-ramps will be in the tunnel itself because of geology. Here are a few pictures and visualizations of the tunnel.

The tunnel is in the northwest, by the word "ŠENTVID":

And 3 visualizations: http://www.elea.si/sentvid_04.htm.

If you're interested in more, just ask.

But it will be opened before tourist season.

Hopefully ...

It's a shame anyway, b/c most of protocolar movements happen in the northwest of Ljubljana.

You know, I really like those Slovenian names For me, they (as well as most Hungarian ones) are quite easy to pronounce, probably because both Slavic languages and Hungarian are very familiar to me.

You gotta love names like: Razdrto (), Ajdovščina, and Székesfehérvár in Hungary !

That will be quite a complex tunnel.
But in the second image it looks like there are left turns inside the tunnel

Those aren't left turns, those are connecting evacuation shafts between the two tubes in case of an emergency in one of the tubes.

The most challenging thing to do is excavating caverns with exits. Geology is very demanding (explosives are not needed and you can dig into that soil with your bare hand), caverns are about 30 meters wide (I know that wider exist in the world). Geology is similar to 2 other large tunnels in Slovenia, but caverns are new thing in this type of soil.

Overall, project is about 150% over budget and 18 months late (it was planned at first to be opened in end of 2006). But this tunnel and motorway connection is badly needed, especially because daily commuting is making big pressure on existing suburban roads. Transit traffic is critical only in some weekends in the summer.

I can really see an Extreme Engineering episode about the Šentvid Tunnel, hehehe! Huge projects like that are always overbudget, late and complicated..

Problem is only, that this is not huge project at all, more like a complicated point in motorway network, especially when comparing to new railways, which will be much more complex and expensive thing to engineer.

A new intelligent traffic control system will be inaugurated on part of the Ljubljana ringroad on Monday.

The system is already in place on the A1 motorway, on the section over Trojane and the section from Divača to Koper, to be exact.

Chris, do you perhaps know which is the smallest European city with a motorway ring? I suspect Ljubljana, but there are some contestants, like Charleroi. But I don't like Charleroi's ring too much, it goes too much around the city IMO. What about Kortrijk? I can't see it well on Google Earth, but looks to me like there's a rather bad connection between R8 and E17. And I mean a motorway ring that functions as such, not like around Austrian Wels.
