Ljubljana might be a good one. Charleroi is quite large, about 600.000 in the urban area. Kortrijk doesn't have a full motorway ringroad. Rennes and Caen are also not very large French cities with a ringroad, but they have a larger "aire urbaine".

I think Caen is a good contestant, with 115.000 inhabitants in the city, and 199.000 in the urban area.

Coastal cities usually don't have a good ringroad.

^ You're right, the title should go to Caen, b/c LJ has at least 250,000 inhabitants (300,000 with suburbs). How haven't I noticed it yet?

Chris, have you heard of the R9 in Charleroi (Petite Ceinture de Charleroi)? It's gotta be the shortest motorway/expressway ring in the world, just 5 km... but it's one-way, really unusual!

Charleroi itself is pretty much a dump though.

Old particle-black abandoned factories, an unemployment rate of over 30% and a lot of criminal activity.

Yes, I've heard. Sounds like Winterthur for Switzerland.

I have a question about the tolls.

I see ABC toll booths, and some with none. How do you pay tolls as a foreigner?

I also read Verso wrote that in 2008 all tolls will be collected electronically, how will that work out for foreigners?

I'm thinking about to visit Slovenia someday this year (though i have too many plans, too little money, time and days off work )

On all open booths except those signed "ABC users only" you pay with cash or following cards:

Also foreigners can use ABC system too with no problems (contrary to Italian Telepass). Many foreigner drivers from neighboring countries use it. You just buy transponder (about 17 €), put some cash onto (if you choose prepaid system) and voila. It can be used only with normal cars without trailers.

More detail here:

There won't be electronic tolling in 2008, it is planned in 2009, first for trucks. It will be GPS based. Details are still not known, but in my opinion it would be better to use Austrian microwave system. ABC system, currently in use is similar, just older and thus less advanced.

well, if oyu have ABC application, then you can use it. otherwise, you pay with cash or cards at noon ABC or combined lanes. i wonder if ABC is compatible with other similar systems (for instance Telepass, Telepeage, Via-T...), or you must have different applicators for each of those systems?

edit: keber answered but my question about compatibility stays

No, it is not compatible. Would be nice to be compatible at least with Croatian ENP (Telepass is quite different story). But as I know, electronic toll systems are not compatible between countries anywhere in Europe mostly because of "roaming" issues.

Thanks.

In the Netherlands, they are planning to setting up a GPS based mileage tollsystem. The tolls are said to be extraordinary high (up to 15 cents per kilometer during rushhours!) I think Europe has to act here, and have to regulate countries who want to implement electronic tolls, that they have the same or compatible systems. Otherwise, there will be too much different tolling systems.

it would be nice indeed. but our system is totaly crap. you cannot pass smooth as in Slovenia, you must almost stop your car, and some marks of cars have problems even when they stop, so you must take applicator out through window (i heard for Honda Accord about that)

^ Once I drove more than 40 km/h and caused a small traffic jam, when the ramp didn't open.

News

Government decided to introduce vignettes for personal vehicles as soon as possible. They should be only temporary until introduction of satellite system tolling for personal cars (from 2011). Truckers will pay tolls at toll booths as it is now, satellite tolling system for them will be introduced in second half of 2009.

I know, strange system. Be aware, elections are in autumn, so something speedy will be introduced, which will be very confusing thing.
