Am I right that I cannot use Austrian pre-payed video toll when I'm entering Karavanke tunnel from Slovenian side?

Not sure, but likely not: there are toll booths on each side of the tunnel, each before you enter; and the ASFINAG folder (Geman language only, at http://www.asfinag.at/documents/1018...d-e2f1e7654f5e) mentions that the Video Maut is valid "southbound"...

Yep, you're correct. Videomaut is only valid southbound. Thanks for sharing that pdf.

A tender for a main design project was given (for first real six lane motorway in Slovenia - western Ljubljana bypass, Koseze-Kozarje section, about 3 km)
There are new demands inside regarding cross cestion which will be implemented into new regulations for all new and widened motorways in the future. Some of those points are:
- hard shoulder at least 3,5 meters wide (until now 2,5 m)
- divider lane needs to have hard surface because of mainteance (it's been implemented in few recent renovations)
- hard shoulder needs to be built even on deceleration/acceleration lanes at exits (a forumer in our section suggests possibility of implementing a "running" shoulder on demand)
- no objects (pillars etc) inside divider lanes
- concrete barriers inside divider lanes.

Hardly worth mentioning.

What's a 'divider lane'? A paved over median with crash barriers?

Yes.
It appears that wider hard shoulder will be implemented also at future repavements, according to another tender for construction that was put out two days ago. Paved median has been already implemented at some latest repavements.

@Verso: that section is often mentioned in traffic reports therefore is still worth mentioning

This made me wonder. How many options will there be to cross Slovenia from Austria to Croatia without a vignette after the remaining part is finished? I had a drive trough there only once (Mureck/Trate - Lenart - Ptuj - Gruškovje) and recall to have only one obvious road from Ptuj to the SLO/HR border.

I have plans to make a similar crossing this year as well. How is the road from Trate to Lenart at this moment? I plan to stop in Lenart for an overnight stay, so buying a vignette for the 30km of highway would not make much sense.

actually, it's gonna be 60 km of motorway. if you combine it with return within 1 week, then it is not that bad. still expensive (0,125€/km), but not much more expensive than HR part (which is, actually hell expensive with its price of 0,118€/km; usual pricing in HR is cca 0,065€/km)

They will build a new regional road as well.

There's a parallel local road, but it's substandard. However, they will build a new parallel regional road in addition to the motorway.

Edit: Uksi was faster

When is this missing link scheduled to be completed?

So when this is completed Slovenia really won't have any high priority projects left, only Postojna - HR border (Rupa). Is that right?

For Christmas 2018.

Only the second tube of the Karavanke Tunnel. Postojna-HR is too empty for a motorway, only Postojna-Pivka has some mentionworthy traffic. Even Koper-HR has more traffic.

Nope. First priority is gonna be second tube of Karavanke tunnel and also a final part of H6 to Lucija (Portorož). Ther eis a plan also for missing link between CRO border and Koper (H5) and for expressway from A1 to Velenje and then to Slovenj Gradec and Dravograd. At the moment there isn't any plan to build Postojna - CRO border (Rupa) in near future.

OK, so the second tube of Karavanke tunnel will be built, and this is a big project. But after that, Koper-CRO border, Portorož area, this is not a major project, from what I can see it is all under 10km. Expressway from A1 to Velenje and then to Slovenj Gradec and Dravograd, is this a reality, or just a dream?

I would propose from Novo Mesto to Karlovac (CRO) or direct to A1 in Croatia as an interesting link, but not sure if there is demand for such a route.

But other than the routes near Koper and Karavanke (and under construction at Ptuj area) most of the SLO motorway network is just about complete.

Congrats!

It will be built from late 2017 to 2021, the existing tunnel tube will be renovated 2022/23. Total costs are 310 million €, the Slovenian part costs about 50%.

The motorway to Jelšane/Rupa is cursed. It's not possible to build it towards Divača due to conservation concerns and possible effects on the Skocjan Caves, which are under Unesco protection - but the A1 runs a few kilometres from the caves and isn't considered a problem. The route towards Postojna is hindered by NIMBYs and again conservation issues. And the fears of a traffic meltdown after Croatia's entrance into the EU have not materialised, the current road has not seen any significant traffic increase since 2013, putting the entire motorway's feasibility into question.

Thanks for the explanation.

Has there been any recent talk of connecting Kozina - Rupa? These country roads must be packed with tourists in the warm months.
