On motorways and expressways with vignette

In accordance with the amendment of the Public Roads Act, approved by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia end of April this year, use of vignettes is obligatory for all vehicles with the permissible maximum weight of 3,500 kg (the current first and second toll-rate category) on motorways and expressways in the Republic of Slovenia as of 1 July 2008. The toll-collection system with vignettes is being introduced with the aim of improving traffic flow and reducing emissions to the environment.

With the introduction of the toll-collection system with vignettes in the second half of 2008, only half-yearly vignettes will be put on sale, while purchase of yearly vignettes for 2009 will be possible not later than by the beginning of December 2008.

Vignettes are expected to be put on sale in the following locations: at filling stations in Slovenia and the neighbouring countries and in the branch offices of the national and foreign automobile clubs. All users will be timely informed about those and other possible sale outlets.

Type of vignette and prices:
  • yearly vignette for vehicles with the permissible maximum weight of 3,500 kg*: 55 EUR
  • half-yearly vignette for with the permissible maximum weigh to 3,500 kg**: 35 EUR
  • yearly vignette for motorcycles*: 27,50 EUR
  • half-yearly vignette for motorcycles**: 17,50 EUR

* Yearly vignette for the current year will be valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the next year (total of 14 months).
** Half-yearly will be valid for six months following the day of its purchase.

Using motorways and expressways without a valid and properly displayed vignette in a vehicle will be considered a violation of the law and will be sanctioned with a fine between 300 and 800 EUR. In addition to this fine, a new sticker must be purchased and displayed on the vehicle.

Controversial Šentvid Tunnel opens

The last Ljubljana bypass put in traffic

After four years of construction they finally opened the last bypass in northwestern Ljubljana, between Šentvid and Koseze. The new 5.5-km-long motorway connects the Ljubljana motorway ring with the motorway for Villach. The most important object on the new motorway is 6-lane (2×3) 1.2-km Šentvid Tunnel (together with the Šentvid Gallery 1.5 km), the most expensive Slovenian tunnel of all times (per km). From 48 million euros in 2004, its price had skyrocketed for almost 200%, to 135.7 million euros, which (without 11-million-€-worth electromechanical equipment) amounts to more than 100 million euros per km. Its peculiarity is an interchange with the Celovška Road within the tunnel itself, branching off in a cavern. However, the connecting tubes will only be built next year. Length of motorways in Slovenia rises to 432 km.

The first (temporary) one-way motorway in Slovenia

Yesterday they opened the first (temporary) one-way motorway in Slovenia and will double it later this year. It's 5 km of the A5 motorway between Spodnja Senarska and Lenart, fully (both lanes) opened in direction Maribor. The other half is in fact also already done, but they are afraid that some drivers (especially foreign truck drivers) would overlook signs directing you off the motorway for direction Hungary and would end up on narrow local roads. Interesting.

World record!!!

New tunnel already closed after few hours from opening. Some say, that some freight from truck lies on pavement, news from TV say about falling some concrete from tunnel ceiling.

Amazing.

EDIT: official, some concrete, about 0.5 m3 volume, fell from the ceiling onto surface. What a shame! Repair is required.

The best? One of the most delayed and cost overrun project in Slovenia.

Think of Boston's Big Dig, something similar, but on smaller scale. As of now, including partial tunnel wall collapse (thankfully no damage was done to anyone)

The concrete didn't fall from the ceiling of the new tunnel, but of the old gallery, built already in 1984, when they were building the Ljubljana-Kranj motorway. But didn't they renovate it? Anyway, it happened here, in the middle:

Damage was repaired already during the night and now tunnel is fully opened.

As told by officials, some fireproofing coating fell from old part of the tunnel, built already in 1984, but was not used (dead end). Some German company is to blame.
