Couldn't they just buy ones made in India, than donating 750 million dollar to those cheap knock off manufacturers. Haven't they learnt from King long buses yet? And what about investment and employment remaining within the country?

How many Indian companies have had trains running in India? Even the suburban trains are imported.

Bombardier has a new plant in Gujarat for Delhi Metro. And the coaches are pretty good, ain't they?

Hmmm i c. Thanks Abhishek- Just to reconfirm that the Metro in Mumbai is an SG network right? - apologies for what seems obvious - have taken a break from this thread for a while. Which will mean that it is a seperate network from the current suburban antiquity/mediocrity.

Hope this would mean Delhi Metro like standards of platforms, stations and passenger experience. How they will accomodate the rush effectively - will it result in the worldwide norm of rush hour 'crush density' of passengers or the Mumbai 'Super Crush Density' remains to be seen in practice.

Yes, it's all SG and separate from suburban network but will offer transfers to suburban (paid transfers).

Yes, it would be like Delhi metro or any other modern metro. Since it is today's metro, it will be able to have higher frequency of trains than suburban network. Also it won't be as busy as WR or CR lines since they provide access to millions of people living along them, while metro line is a short one. So, I don't expect as severe crowding as suburban.

That was a fast response Abhishek - I am sure this new experience of travelling on the metro in Mumbai will have a positive outcome to passenger experience on the poor, overworked bursting-at-the-seams suburban system....better technological application, better presentation/designs/materials of the trains and stations, safer and faster signalling and higher frequencies...

And who knows - it might even mean, in the medium to long term, a happy downgrade of the 'Super crush' to just a superb 'Crush Density' stituation in the trains...

High fares will restrict crowd.
Ticketless travel, season tickets at throw away prices will not be there.

Indian companies are not supposed to manufacture trains. Only government is allowed to do that.

China to ship 18 trains for Mumbai Metro
PTI, Mar 23, 2010, 04.32pm IST

Tags:China|Mumbai metroBEIJING: China is set to dispatch 18 high-tech metro trains to Mumbai's new subway network
under a USD 110 million contract and the rails would be ready for operation after their trial run in India's financial hub.

The subway trains rolled off the production line on March 20 and would take a month to ship from Shanghai before their trial is launched in Mumbai in May, said Qian Houkuan, Director of Information and Technology at Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works which manufactured the rails.

The trains are China's first-ever export of A-type subway rails, which are wider than three metres and have greater passenger capacity than other models, the official Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying today.

The trains, with automatic driving systems and maximum speed of 80 km per hour, could operate in temperatures up to 55 degrees Celsius and 100 per cent humidity, Qin said.

Each of their 3.2-metre compartments could carry 390 people, 72 more than the 3-metre A-type trains used in China, he said.

The subway trains were sold to Mumbai at the cost of USD 110 million.

There are several government - public sector industries that manufacture metro trains/Suburban trains - EMUs. To name a few:
BEML, ICF, RCF, Jessop & Co. etc.
Indian private companies are also now going into maufacturing EMUs. I believe Jindal is building coaches, wagons and will later on EMUs. Foreign companies like Bombardier have built a plant in Gujarat where they manufacture EMUs (Delhi Metro).

A broad gauge width on standard gauge ? That's nice .

Also capacity per coach is high, though I doubt that figure. Delhi metro's BG trains have capacity of about 275 per coach and SG have 250 per coach. I hope this 390 per coach figure is not a misprint.

the rolling stock looks cool. A lot better than the Delhi metro by look. But then I am not sure of quality and finish, attention to detail etc. Also not sure how the interiors are. So lets wait and see.

It was always 3.2 m wide to begin with. The MMRDA was stringent about this in the RS tendering physical parameter.

I'm in touch with the Rolling Stock manager at Mumbai Metro One and will request the exact specs and capacity. That fellow btw used to work in DMRC before MM1 lured him with a better package.

Thanks for clarification And yeah, do ask about the capacity.

Mumbai metro has achieved double benefit by having this width. Benefit of BG was more width of stock and that of SG was better turning radius and easily available parts. So, it has got the best of both. That should now give a rest to BG vs SG debate.
