In today's Mumbai Mirror.
Related to Metro works : When Metro engineers began the work, they had estimated they would have to design 11 different pier caps, the horizontal part of the T shaped structures that hold up the elevated corridor. They have so far designed 200 different pier caps! This was so because of the swarm of utilities that runs under our roads. Every pier, the vertical part of the 'T', needed an independent design to make sure the utilities were not disturbed. Since every pier was a new design, the pier caps changed too. ![]() For the rest of the article see : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...11753&page=170 Last edited by fuwad; June 3rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM. |

It is for those who thought that the utilities will hamper underground lines, but will be a breeze for construction of elevated lines. All the utilities are placed at less than 15 feet depth from the ground level. On the contrary, the underground tunnel for water pipelines didnt have any major issue with any kind of utilities. From Indian Oil junction to Costa Coffee at 7 bungalows park (or rather Enigma Lounge to be precise), the viaducts are complete. Even the viaducts to depot seem to be complete. But they have closed it for station construction. As CG has posted many times here, they have dug out a huge portion underneath the station. The whole problem is haphazard planning. Why not they estimate it properly. The margin of error is completely unacceptable. In this scenario they wanted to go elevated for Line 2. They will block the Kalanagar junction at BKC for around 8 years, if it ever happens. |

Yes,the valid reason is never-ending construction and lack of motivation to finish it fast and reopen the road.

orange pillar is temp. The yellow crane is on top of bridge which runs on rails and can move 360 degree. The big crane on the back lifts the bridge sections from road puts it on the bridge and then the yellow crane lifts them to be assmebled in place.

^ That is still quite a good progress. The Truss on the western side has been dissembled.

yup.... i think they will be building the bridge piece by piece..... may be this what they are referring to as pushing..... if you see it in other way they are actually pushing the bridge slowly onto the railway lines (kinda) isn't it....!!!

As of now, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) is constructing the steel bridge by using pre-cast concrete segments in which a number of small segments are cast between two pillars. The Western Railway has agreed to provide blocks of about two to four hours per day for the construction work.
The MMOPL, comprising Reliance Infrastructure, MMRDA and Veolia Transport, is considering another approach which involves constructing the 183-metre-long bridge by launching girders instead of segments. If this approach is taken, the bridge will require just a couple of girders as against many small segments. However, the alternative girder-launching method will require clearance from the Airport Authority of India (AAI). |
